Can I Have Quick Look at your Watch, please?

I've posted this elsewhere, but thought you might like it too:

Chatting with a colleague yesterday. Noticed that his old Rolex had quite a domed crystal on it, so obviously a nice vintage piece. I asked for a looksee. Delighted to find that it is an original Double Red SD! He mentioned that he had no idea of it’s worth and that he had been offered a thousand pounds for it by a dealer in Inverness a few years ago... The watch belonged to a friend of his who had died and with none of the family wanting to wear a dead family members watch, they gave it to my colleague. It’s well worn, but he has the original box, papers and a service record. However, it looks like nothing has been changed as it all looks original and even the bezel ‘pearl’ is there. It hasn’t been serviced since 94, but keeps decent time.

I reckon it's a MkIII, unless anyone knows differently??

He near crapped himself when I told him of its true value. He’ll probably never wear it again!!

It will never be for sale before his death.

Just thought it was a nice story!

Beautiful watch...nice story...

I´m afraid the bezel insert is a later replacement in one of those services....

Don't think so. I think this watch is the way we like them: untouched.

They seem a lot lighter in color then the three hands... Could just be my eyes

Great story! I hope he continues to wear it. Just insure it properly and enjoy it. It's just a watch after all. A really awesome watch, but still.....

Maybe it is distortion from the scratched beyond belief crystal, but the text looks very odd.

The O's in chronometer appear stretched and larger than the other letters.

I love these types of stories but I always am shocked that someone can own a great piece like this without even being curious about its history/worth. Hopefully the owner appreciates it now as much as one of us would...
