A new addition

First of all I must say that as has been my experience this hobby is populated by some of the finest ladies and gentleman one could ever hope to associate themselves with in any endeavor.

My fellow TRFer Mark (theken) and I met today for lunch, talked watches, and Mark gave me the opportunity to add a piece to my collection that I thought I would only see in photos.

Mark typifies all that is special about this hobby and is a gentleman in every sense of the word. THANK YOU my friend!! I owe you a big one!!!

As some of you know PANERAI has become a brand I've become extremely fond of. The watches, the history, and especially the people who proudly call themselves Paneristi are special and how humbling it is to be associated with them in some small way.

As a goal oriented collector, I thought long about what reference would make a great addition to my 88 and 111. I wanted something special yet went back and forth as to what that might be.....No more.

As a collector and GMT fan this one couldn't be better.

May I present the newest member of my humble collection.

The reference 186 Arktos.

Made for the explorer/adventurer Mike Horn, the 186 came about after the first leg of Mr. Horn's arctic expedition. Mike started with the reference 92 Arktos and asked for the addition of the GMT hand during the trip.

While not considered an SE version, the 186 numbered 500 pieces during the 2005 H series run making one of the more rare pieces in the Panerai line up.

Possessed of anti-magnetic qualities and a soft iron protection of the movement, the 186 sports a special bezel with the cardninal points- N E S W in white gold.

The case back bears Mike's signature as well as a depiction of his adventure,

Needless to say the luminosity of the 186 carries on the tradition of Panerai,

Despite the rounded caseback, the 186 sits well on the wrist and is amazingly comfortable,

For me this is a very special piece that I can't tell you how happy I am to own.

It takes it place along side the 88,

And has become the center piece of my Panerai's,

The package,

The Arktos looks good but wow, that 88 takes some beating.

Which movement is in your Arktos, is it the Valjoux 7750-P1?

Mike, thank you for your very kind words.
I am delighted to have made your acquaintance and have the opportunity to share this watch hobby with a true Rolex expert and a real gentleman .
To be able to add to your collection is very special after seeing part of your collection at the recent KT GTG.
Your pictures are awesome. They make the 186 look fantastic.
I hope the Arktos will be a part of some special times in your life. ENJOY!!!

It is Eddie. Panerai referes to it as the OPVIII

Mike I couldn't agree with you more re the quality of the people on this forum! I've had a couple of exchanges with Mark and, although we haven't met face to face yet, I am looking forward to that time.

Great photos and cool narrative. Wear your new Panerai in good health!

Mike, huge congrats on the Arktos !! Nice to see your Panerai collection growing.Quite a handsome threesome you have now.. The 111 is one of my personal favourites.

Panerai is special ...and the spirit of the people that call themselves "Paneristi", even more so !!

Absolutely stunning, Mike. Very cool reference.
It was great to meet both you & Mark at the vintage Rolex GTG. The transaction between you both are exactly what these GTGs are all about. Always nice to deal with someone you've already met and have established a relationship with.
Sounds like a win/ win for all.
Only problem is I didn't get to see Mike's Pam 88.
Oh well, we'll save that for the next GTG.

Beautiful, Mike. I'm not a great Panerei fan, but the two GMTs are stunning watches. If I were to go over to the PAM side, the 88 is one of the few I would consider.

Enjoy them all.
