How I got my first Rolex - Submariner 114060
Some of you might notice that I am extremely new to this place in terms of a member of the community and this is indeed my very first post. I have been observing the discussions here for a good while now so I thought it appropriate to post something about my recently acquired Submariner 114060. I do also originally hail from Finland (up north, much cold) so please forgive the crude language.
It wasn’t a long time ago that I really started to appreciate watches as an accessory. Until a few months earlier I only wore my Citizen Promaster Diver – a watch inherited from my nowadays not so actively diving grandfather – out of the habit of having a watch on my wrist. Now after a couple months of deployment as a peacekeeper and consequently with a little more extra income I set my mind to getting a watch. The search started with something like Tissot being high on the line. I then started actively scanning watch blogs, new releases, whatever I could set my eyes on about watches and after a couple months I had read and re-read hundreds of watch related articles, reviews and anything to go with the topic. As the reading went on and I found out more about movements, escapements, complications and materials, my price range swell steadily towards the thousands of euros direction. I started the mind-bending journey of liking this watch today and finding another MUCH better one on the next. This went on for a long time until I came to a halt at Grand Seiko. I thought this was the ultimate end where I was going to go as I was looking at a watch in the 5000 euro range (originally aiming at a 600 euro watch…) For a long time (relatively speaking, as the timespan of this entire process is about 5 months) I never even looked at Rolex. It was nothing I could’ve imagined to buy or wear or own. Then after all the other major and minor watch brands had been thoroughly researched I though “Heck, might as well see what this brand is even about” and started reading ABTW’s article on how Rolex makes watches. After that I delved more deeply into the realm of Rolex and the opinions people had about it. It did surprise me. Bloody hell I may have committed my allegiance for Rolex on the spot as I read about their manufacturing methods, having read about other companies’ methods aswell. The heartly sympathy continued when I started reading about people’s divided opinions on Rolex, and actually wristwatches in general. At this point I had to sell it for myself. How could I justify buying a watch that is again much more expensive with ultimately nothing concrete to go against a GS. As at this time I am still located at a military base in a peacekeeping environment so it is quite the challenge to actually get a hands on of these watches. I ended up sucking up all the information about the watches that I could. The Submariner 114060 was always my go-to model when I looked at Rolex watches. The cyclops never attracted me a bit and I loved the timeless (no pun intended) design it had so it was an easy decision. The rivalry was somewhat divided as I loved the GS spring drive collection overall even though it too has the SBGA029 diver’s watch. I sent emails to my nearest AD’s back in Finland (which is my homeland) to get a hands on when I go on a leave. I did get a leave eventually and back in Finland I visited a GS dealer and saw the spring drive watches hands on there. I was convinced that if the Sub would have even the tiniest flaw or dislike I would come back and get a GS. I didn’t. The next day I visited the Rolex AD and picked up the 114060. I gave my little finger and it took the whole hand (indeed on my small wrist the Sub does look properly sized). I had no hesitations whatsoever when I said okay I’ll take it and went on to pay the price for this sweet sweet piece of wristcandy. The rest you may know, especially you who have bought the 114060. You just don’t get enough of it. Unfortunately my work is at it’s core nature not very watch friendly so I still remain to use my Promaster when on duty. I do however wear the 114060 at every occasion I get when I have spare time and just hang out at base. As far as the watch itself goes, I don’t really have so much to compare it to but I do know that it’s a superb watch in every way. I could go on about the dial and the hands and the oh so mesmerizing lume for all night (if I didn’t spend my nights gazing at it) not to mention the Glidelock clasp which leaves me to adjust the clasp time over time just for the ease and fun of it. Can you believe that at first I was disappointed. The Crown on the crown does not line up with the case. Then I looked at it and eventually got over it. This took me something like a whole 5 minutes. Now I cherish the little details that make my Sub MY Sub, like the crown position. To make a proper 'review' there are some photos aswell I probably did not give much in the realm of actual watch reviews, but you all have read those a hundred times already anyways, so I brought you the story of my 114060. |

Nice write-up!
I bought a SubCdate as my first rolex. I contemplated getting without the date, but in the end I had to because of it being a classic Rolex feature. Love the watch and cannot really fault it at all. I love every detail of the watch and would not change anything. That is rare for me to say as I'm never 100% content with a design, colors, etc. I'll say it was tough to let go of the money to get one, since I could have bought a lot of other stuff, but I don't regret it. Now I'm hooked. lol I keep itching to get another watch. |

Great write up, and I hope you enjoy your new watch. I really enjoy reading about owners' pleasure in discovering the simple, subtle qualities of the classic Rolex Submariner, one of the top watches on the world of watches ever. As for a 'proper' review, no need as you've acquired a timepiece whose attributes we are all most familiar with and greatly approve. Enjoy every tick.

Great pics, too, especially the second one, the strong but simple dial is compelling

It is the quintessential, do it all watch that just gets better with time! It will be a while before I find another watch that will sing to me the way the SubC does. It feels like a "problem" that I can't find another watch to buy. However, it is a testiment to the perfection that is the 114060!

The no date Sub is the classic understated watch.
Reliable, solid and never lets you down. Kind of like the work which you do, where you have to work in the background but when things do happen you're the one they turn to. Enjoy the watch. You've made a great choice Sent from my ASUS_Z011D using Tapatalk |

I'm considering purchasing my first Rolex and I'm torn between a 114060 and a 116610. I keep telling myself self if I get the no date l'll regret it later, but fact is I never look at the date on my current watch.

I just bought this watch yesterday. Love it - absolutely love it. Never considered it prior to trying it on at an AD. I always assumed and had the date version in my mind.
Once I tried on the 114060, it rang my bell. One should be very careful trying on the random Rolex for laughs... |
