Fountain pen ink

Hi pen lovers, in years past I've been a fan of noodlers ink. However I've just learned that this ink is considered to be dangerous to vintage pens and a risk of clogging up modern pens. On modern pens I was told to wash the pen out weekly with that ink due to its "bulletproof
" properties. Anyway I'm curious what ink is preferred or recommended by readers here?

I prefer Watermans black ink for all my pens: Waternan, Montblanc, Sailor and Visconti. It seems to have the deeper black I like than MB's black ink and does not clog up pens at all. I haven't tried any other inks as Waterman works good for me.

Pen ink could be a whole forum by itself. i am refraining fom chasing the perfect ink and focusing on just using and enjoying my pens. I don't need another hobby.

That is so true! I started with MB ink and have moved around a bit.

I've never had a problem with MB or Pelikan ink. They work well on different types of pens.

I doubt it could make it as its own forum judging by 3 replies...

I've been using lamy blue ink this week. I only use blue variant so photo copies can be distinguished from the original. I think the downside is the blues don't hold up to water, getting wet.

I also recently purchased a noodlers rollerball pen that uses fountain pen ink, I haven't brought that in to the rotation as I'm trying to use the new fountain pen as much as possible for now.

I purchased a bottle of 54th Massachusetts from noodlers that I intend on using with the noodlers pen. I'm also very interested in noodlers highlighter ink. According to noodlers they are developing a highlighter pen. The one they give away with that highlighter ink is made in Japan I believe and the amazon reviews indicate that it's a leaky one.

Agree, I dumped the MB ink for Waterman. I like the darker color of the Waterman vs MB. Short of not using the pen (and having the ink dry, no other issues

There are many fine brands of ink available on the market by many different manufacturers so experiment and see what works best for you. I like the fact that you have many color choices and can change them up in your pens when ever you want to.....

I'm not certain if I have my facts straight but I believe the blue/black which is archival safe is ink that is hard on fountain pens. I have and use ink from may companies...MontBlanc, Noodlers, Waterman and Pelikan to name a few!!!

Take it easy.....Leo

I'm a big fan of J. Herbin ink. Currently using their 1670 - blue ink.

I use Noodlers quite often and have never had a problem. The key is to use your pen and not allow it to sit until the ink thickens over time. Any ink, even the best, will cause issues if left in a nice pen and not "cycled" through.

Noodlers offers a vast variety of colors and their flow characteristics are good. However, if you want a really good ink you need to research for yourself (Google it up) and make a decision. I personally love Delta Blue. Such a very rich, deep, almost translucent / florescent color. I highly recommend it if you can locate it. It is very hard to source. Very hard!

The review below doesn't do it justice, but will give you an idea.

Thanks. Been looking around. Love that delta blue. As to having things dry out, I left my noodlers fountain pen ink roller ball filled on my desk for the weekend and on Monday am it was dried ... Ugh.

There are so many choices for ink that it can be confusing.

I chose my preferred color first, Extremely dark Blue, and then went on to try a lot of different brands.

My latest is the ink that comes from Colorado Pen Co....their "Private Reserve" as the consistency of color is great.

I do need to try noodlers.

For me it's fun to change up the colors in my Fountain pens and one color I'd like to buy is the Toffee Brown that MontBlanc makes...I really like the hue. So next time I'm in Chicago and find myself on North Michigan Avenue(the Mag Mile)I'll stop in and pick up a bottle.....

I love the Pilot Iroshizuku range of colors. Currently I'm using a 1:1 mix of Kon-Peki to Yama-Budo in my Namiki Emperor. My other favorite inks include Aurora Black, Pilot Blue-Black and most Sailor inks. Tried Noodler's before but it usually bleeds through on all the papers I use. Also it doesn't shade well for me.

I use Aurora Fine Black, J. Herbin Blue, and Waterman blue and black. They all work well and are deep, rich in color. But then I'm no expert

To add to my earlier post in this thread: I only use Sheaffer Skrip Blue ink in my vintage pens. Parker/Waterman/Sheaffer inks are recommended for use in vintage pens because they are less likely to stain vintage materials, especially celluloid.

I only use J.Herbin ink with my vintage pens. Easier to flush... new pens are with Pilot Iroshizuku. Love their colours and shades.

I use Pelikan. I like the blue and when the cap comes off my pen and the ink gets on my shirt it washes right off.

I like the blue for that reason also. Fp is messy especially when filling it. But I don't like how the ink will wash off the page with a drop or two of water.

+1 on Iroshizuku. Beautiful inks and they work so well with other pens other than Pilot. However Iroshizuku inks used in my Falcon, Custom 92 and VP's definitely are made for each other.
