Wife says I should buy a Rolex

I know, this is closely related to this thread, but different enough, perhaps?

So, a few weeks ago I ordered a couple of watches from Dan Henry, one auto and one quartz. I don't generally care for quartz, but wanted to give the brand a try. Long story short, I decided against the quartz model for several reasons, one of which was the difficulty in reading the time (much like the Daytona, for me) and I brought the automatic model home for the wife to see and get her opinion, as I was not initially thrilled with it myself.

First thing she says is, "that strap is horrible" (it was a cheap rubber thing that came with it) and the second thing is "you should just get another Rolex. They look good on you."

She's such an enabler. LOL

I was impressed with the build and finish quality of the Dan Henry (I'll do a thread on that in the appropriate forum, later) but it's very tall (thick) and the aforementioned strap is crap and it runs 10 seconds slow per day which I guess isn't bad for a sub-$300 watch, but the movement date adjustment sucks and it has a slow BPH rate and looks kind of weird anyway, so back it goes too.

So all I have now is my BB58 (which is a great watch) and I will continue to wait for a new Sub, as I ain't payin' market rates to get one grey or used.

Of course, she also had to add "I really liked that green one you had," the LV that I sold years ago for the (now painful to remember) price of around $5K.

You could always buy a sub on the grey, wear it, and when you get the call sell the grey purchased watch. Don’t wear it into your AD as they likely won’t get you one if they see you wearing it. Easy way to get what you want now with minimal loss. You’re going to spend a touch more than msrp when it’s all said and done, but you won’t have to wait. If it takes two years, you’re wearing the grey watch the entire time, no big deal.

I bet you could buy a worn sub and resell for a total loss of $1,000-$1,500 max if the market sits where it is right now.

This is great advice. And if the AD never comes through, which is a possibility in these crazy times at least you've got your watch that you can wear for life. Price won't matter in 5-10 years down the road.

Lucky man. My wife bought my SkyD as en engagement present, but I fear that for my next purchase (Expl 2 Polar) she will be like back in a more rational resource allocation mode...

Happy wife, happy life! So hurry and buy a Rolex before she really gets angry

Additionally, I agree with the strategy of buying grey now and enjoying while waiting for the AD to call. If and when they do, great... get rid of one for hopefully even or a minimal loss and continue on. If they don't ever call, well then you've been enjoying one anyway. Negligible downside imo

Sounds like you need to just keep on waiting for the sub. A second option would be to pay gray, then sell it at a bit of a loss once your AD comes through.

I also feel you on the LV comment. I sold a 16610LV in 2008/2009 for $4200. Wish I kept that watch

if wife say that, you should be handing over your credit card to AD right away, only problem is most/all don't have any inventory.

Sold my 5167 for 14.5k and 5711 for 20k if that makes you feel better.

I would not risk disappointing your wife here.

LOL

Correction above: I wrote "LV" and I should have written LVC since that seems to be the correct nomenclature for the hulk.
