So who's actually paid for a debt/services with a Rolex?

This is just out of curiosity. I've heard and read several times that wearing a Rolex is like wearing money/cash on your wrist. How you can use it to pay for a service or pay off a debt in an emergency case. I can't think of any situation I've been in where the other party would have accepted a Rolex.... Such as paying for an expensive car repair or for a kitchen remodel. Has anyone actually done such thing? If yes, then for what? Please elaborate without getting too personal...

You don’t actually use hard assets like Rolex to purchase things or to pay off debt. You could but it’s not common. Due to a few factors,, Rolex’s are easier to liquidate into cash than other hard assets like cars, art, etc

I think the scenario would be in a more of a life of death situation where the party you're dealing with won't murder you and just take it.

i once read an article (that i tried to search and couldn't) about an army man who recommend always wearing a submariner when deployed. that way, no matter what, he always had something very valuable to negotiate with in any situation

i couldn't help but think such a thing could result in his murder and theft of the watch

I've had someone pay me back with a Rolex before. They owed me a few $K, offered me the watch and turned it for a profit. So, it worked out.

Let' just call a spade a spade. No reason to get upset or consider it cringe worthy...

If you're walking around while wearing a brand new Rolex Submariner or perhaps a GMT Master II Pepsi, then you're walking around with serious coin on your wrist that's easily convertible no matter what country you're in. That's a fact.

No doubt people have gambled away their watch, paid off a debt, or pawned one off in a pinch.

Not saying I condone it. I'd never find myself in that position, but I'm sure it happens.

Maybe I am old, but don't see this as "cringe" and thing using the word cringe is indeed cringe itself. I have sold off watches to fund other priorities. I sold off my speedy pro for a new dual suspension mountain bike a couple years back, and funded some upgrades in the kitchen with others. Could I have afforded to just pay for them, sure but given the watches were not getting much action, flipped them to fund something else.

Didn't Nicolas Cage offer someone a 16610 in one of the National Treasures? I think he said something along the lines of "it's quite a valuable watch". I can't remember for sure. Maybe people should have walked out of the theater, calling it cringe.

Yes, and Tom Cruise in Rain Man pawned off his Rolex Day Date prior to the gambling escapades him and his brother did in Vegas.

Again, I would never find myself in this position, but there is no doubt that this happens all the time...

It's just reality. Nothing "cringe" about it at all...

There are stories of Cubans leaving the Island early on when Castro came into power, and sold their Rolex to get food on the table.

I think this is the spirit in which the OP asked the question - but the regulars decided to be triggered.

So who's actually paid for a debt/services with a Rolex?

Guilty. I decided to pay off our Toyota Sienna using proceeds from the sale of a black Daytona 520 I didn't end up liking as much as I thought I would.

Purchase price was $45,700 sticker and I paid about $1,000 a month for a couple years before I decided to pay the final $25,000 after selling the Daytona.

That’s a good use of the market IMO.

I had a guy attempt to pay me for a race engine with a serti dial submariner last year. The engine was $7500 and I was going to give him the engine + $1000. He pulled out at the last minute and just paid me cash. He was wearing a YG day date he won in a poker game LOL.

I think the problem today to find yourself in a situation where it might help to do a trade like that in a life or death situation would be the proliferation of fakes. I think people might be skeptical of the watch at hand.... (I know I would be sketched out if someone tried to pay me via a luxury watch)

Regardless I do always travel with a couple of Benjamins tucked in my socks when I find myself exploring the 3rd world.

The idea of "paying with Rolex" is that it is known as valuable item all around the world. I am sure you can get out of predicaments and/or make problems disappear involving local officials in many countries around the world if you are willing part with your watch.

50 years later the yarn is a legend. If this scenario was depicted in a fictional film or story, give it 50 years and some people will cite it as documentary evidence.

No amount of money can pay for such legendary PR.

Didn’t Jeremy Renner take a yellow gold Daytona off a bad guy and trade it for safe passage on a ship in the South China Sea in “Bourne Legacy”?
