First Rolex Help
Good morning,
I am new to the forums and new to Rolex as well. I have started building my watch collection with less expensive and mid tier pre-luxury style watches and with the new release of the submariner update was hoping now would be a great time to get my first Rolex. My local AD has been really helpful in discussion but I was hoping to get the experts and enthusiasts help here too. I am looking at either the Submariner or the Submariner Date. Honestly, the look of both is fairly equal to my eye as they are both beautiful watches. I appreciate the history of the Submariner but also the improved utility of the Submariner Date. I do have other watches with a date complication already so it is not “necessary” for that reason. Are there any aspects of this that I am not considering? Any thoughts on them in comparison? Is one more collectible or harder to get? Anything other opinions? Thank you for helping with my pretty open ended question! This is all just so new to me :-) Cory |

i would get one with the date personally. I bought my first Rolex a few months ago and I was shocked how many times I need to check what the date is.

Welcome to the forum
There's no wrong answer but for me, I much prefer the unblemished look of this dial. Good luck and I hope you land one20200919_131705.jpg Sent from my SM-G960W using Tapatalk |

I got the new 2020 no date sub last week, I had my heart set on the date sub but the no date became available. To be honest, it's not as bad not having a date as I thought it was going to be. I think the coolness factor supercedes not having a date.
Although, if both were placed in front of me and there was no scarcity issues then I would go for the date. |

That look with no date sure is sharp!! Boy I don’t know. I do not want to ask the AD to put me on a list for both as I don’t wanna waste their time with my first watch from them. Such a hard call!

No date.
I have the 114060, I love it. The original sub was a no date. I have the date on my cell phone that I look at all day. Just saying Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I like the aesthetics of the “no date” better than the date version. However, I need a date function on my watches. Only piece that gets a pass is a Daytona for “my” needs.
Whichever one you decide, will be an excellent piece for a couple of lifetimes. You’d get most of your money back with either one if you decided to move on. |

I prefer the look of no cyclops but prefer the usefulness of having the date. For me, I love the SD4K.
If I were you, I'd rather have the date with cyclops. You don't realize how useful the date complication is until you don't have it. |

Thank you all for your input! There is so much to consider (did not even consider the SD4K for instance). Really appreciate everyone's thoughts on this :-)

You can't go wrong with either, but it would be "no date" for me. I've never been keen on the cyclops, but that's just me!

Get the date if it's going to be a single watch collection, or will be the key primary watch for a while before the collection madness takes over.
If will be part of a large collection, get the no date. (e.g. if you get the GMT later, then the no date will provide more contrast in the collection.) |

I have a Sub and a Sub Date. I tend to wear the no date one on weekends since I'm frequently referencing the date on my watch during the week (signing documents, etc.). You can't really do wrong with either, though. I love the look of the clean balanced dial on the no date.

Sub. and Sub. Date both are excellent timepiece.
Before the new releases, I bought Sub. ND and the Hulk. For new releases, I bought Sub. Date and new Kermit. All of them are great to have, just tell SA that which one is available first you take that one. After you have one, if you want to have another, take new Kermit it would be good too. |

I like having the date because I use it.
I like the clean look of the no date. It's up to you, your personal taste. |

If it were me, I would choose the no date. It looks much cleaner and you don't have to touch the watch if you wear it everyday except for DST
I got my no date sub years ago and have never regretted it. My cellphone, computer, car infotainment center, various calendars in my home and at work (when I finally go back) all tell the date so I am never without knowing the date. But there really is no bad choice here as the date version is great also |

I like my 114060 because of the symmetry of the dial and I also find it better for a grab and go, not having to mess with setting the date. I don't keep my watches in a winder.
Either one is a good choice. |

I have a 114060 for the same reasons others have suggested, looks so much better symmetrically. However when I actually started wearing it I didn’t realise how much I’d be looking down for the date. For this reason doesn’t get worn much. Love to add the new date. I do wear my TT slot though.

Greatly appreciate the many responses! This is really helpful. I had not thought about some of these ideas, especially having greater contrast with a future GMT Master (if I can ever get one!). The symmetry of the no date is really nice as well. I am leaning in the no date direction with the symmetry, being the original style, and contrast with GMT Master watch. Still considering though as the Date version is truly beautiful. Thank you all!

I'm a Sub date kind of guy personally. While the clean look of the Sub is great, it just needs that date to pop for me.

I prefer the functionality of the date but never liked the cyclop look at all.
So I picked form over function and went with the regular Sub. There's less regular Subs than date Subs, but the latter is in higher demand. |

You are approaching this rationally. There is nothing rational about collecting watches. Get the one you WANT.

Sub Date for an only nice watch and Sub if you collect watches. There is a purity in the Sub and and you can always use the GMT that you will end up buying if you need to know the Date. Ask me how I know!

Haha I am already thinking of putting my name on a list for the Pepsi GMT so I can get that in 5-10 years :-)
And yes; I tend to come across things in a rational way. I need to bring some more emotion into this!! |

Another question for you. How big are you, what is your wrist size? The third option no one is mentioning is the SD43. It is the big brother to the Sub Date and it has a few features that make it somewhat unique. It is basically 2MM bigger than the ones you are looking at and has a really cool red line of text on the dial. It is a bit more and is a bit thicker but it is an awesome piece. It really is a slightly larger, slightly nicer version of the Sub.

Same here; it's either a quick glance at my watch or search for a calendar.

Tough call. truth be told I generally double check the watch date is correct on my phone.
I think if its your only Rolex then I would go date. If you plan to add another with a date function I would go no date. One thing I will say is there is something very satisfying about how quick it is to set the time on a non date watch if worn as part of a rotation. |

All very good points... Thank you
And to answer question above my wrist is about 6 3/4 inches around and I am an average build 5'9'' guys with some muscle but not big. 43 mm may be a bit too much for my wrist :-( |
