Not your usual piece of crap Tudor submariner just listed on ebay

Looks like a 7924 with a bad dial. Should be fun to watch this one !

Exact same watch? , seller seems convinced dial is 100% authentic which could explain why the price wasn’t right

Exact same watch. Seller says Christie's guy states untouched but everyone else states touched. I am one of the stated touched ; ).

Dial might be original, well it is original but the script is repainted with an earlier style of redial.

Good evening Gentlemen,
Yah, that's me. Might I take a look at your service dial please? How much were you wanting for that?
Thank you greatly,
Josh

Christie's guy is now with Sotheby's. Rich Lopez. And he stands by dial. But I get it. You guys hate it. But he did come to the house. I think he wanted to see the minute repeater.

Josh, based on what you are saying Rich Lopez is either wrong or misleading you. That dial is not 100% original and untouched. It has nothing to do with hate, has everything to do with the print replaced a couple decades ago.

The number one item to have on a vintage watch is the dial, a beautiful and original dial is what makes the watch.

Seller doesn’t appear to dispute the many that have claimed repaint. He/She also doesn’t appear to be a seller as this is the only item they have listed.

I had a Chapter Ring Silverprint 100m dial for 7924 but sold it. I do have a standard 100m service dial

With the case back scratched up that badly, I’d be afraid to see what the inside looks like

It’s an expression meaning a buyer should trust the seller first.

Otherwise, as they say, a fool and his money often go separate ways.

Ajmarcus, I’m familiar with the expression. I do find it very funny. I rather take a chance on eBay. There are risks but huge rewards. Luck, many years of experience and deep knowledge help me make good decisions.

I hear you Harry. And, frankly, that’s my approach as well. But I do it within reason. Just thought I’d post that common sense credo for those with less expertise and knowledge than yourself.

One thing that stood out in the description, “Now... clearly worth somewhere from 13-230k.”

Unbridled optimism...
Also -
Anyone know when Christie’s auction house experts began making house calls???

FWIW it is possible that early in this watch’s “life with father” it had water damage and an indie jeweler watchmaker had a dial reprint to address any dial damage. It could explain an earlier font style someone noted above. In the day, that was not considered the “sin against horology” as it is now...

Josh it’s a very nice watch. But the dial is redone. But I suggest you speak to someone you trust to affirm my opinion. Sadly the dial represents the majority of the value of the watch.
Best of luck with it.
Regards, Harry

Am I that idiot? I teach English and owned the watch during the time you say it was painted, presumably at some cost, while the watch had none!

Weird listing. Guaranteed to scare off almost anyone. And to make it even sketchier, the bidder's identities are hidden.

I like a little story to a listing. His needed an editor, but it’s amusing.

I find it fun to understand and learn the provenance of an item.

I think the seller is a good guy and I hope it does well.

I am becoming convinced the seller is incapable of help. I have traded several emails with the seller, given him honest advice of a Tudor addict, broken things down in some detail (including the info about pad printing) and he chooses not to listen because it won't bring him the next quarter million. There is a much nicer 7924 sitting at HQ for 6 months @ 80K. But only the exceptional pieces pull top coin.

I also offered to part it out for him (yes I would take a cut) and offered to part it out for him 2 years ago. He has delusions of its value. I think the floor is 30K, parted out. If Bezel pulls better money, it is 40K.

The wild card is the bezel which is safe at 10K - which could be more - but is fitted on a surprisingly smaller number of watches. There are several RED bezel styles, this is just one, and it is in mediocre shape. One sold on VRM over summer for near 30K that was in EXCELLENT shape. Far better than this one that will need to stay in the bezel because of damage and might simply crumble apart if / when removed. How many people, that have the correct watch from 1957 or 1958, are willing to drop 20 Grand on a rare but still grade -C insert that might break when fitting to a watch?

The dial fonts are reprinted, he thinks it is original.

Hey Josh, I tried to help you.

Hey John,
You offered 40 grand, I fitted correct hands and two years later, you offer 30 because of covid and the market crumbling you say. You don't even offer to buy it, just "let [you] hold on to it for a while." John, you said this pad printed in the eighties before I pointed out that it wasn't. Then, you said it was done in the sixties. Who would have done this and why? A New York jeweler? For what money? The watch had no value and my dad and his brother had serious watches. As for your tritium dial, do you think that makes it better? Why do you want to trade that for my original dial which you admit is original? What would you do with it? Guys, I'm just being honest. The more I look the worse the dial looks, but it is authentic and original. It was covered in salt and oil and chlorine more than once. John, I'm sure you're the best and I just don't know what to say beyond that. Happy to show you the watch when you visit Trumbull again, just not sure it will make any difference. You say, now, it was painted (not pad printed?) in the sixties. John, how many hours would that have taken? Why would a jeweler have taken the time? Sorry about the 30k consignment offer. I'm still hoping for about 42k.
And, to answer another question, Ebay charges $750 over $7500 and PayPal charges 2.9% plus 50 cents.
Thank you again!
