Never paid a deposit in my life for a watch and I would not consider it either. My AD knows I am serious when I commit to any piece without needing to do that.

It varies by AD.
I guess getting a deposit eliminates tire kickers. A waste of time and effort by the AD. |

I would gladly pay upfront for a daytona even if it would take months before I got the piece. A few years ago I put a deposit down when ordering a sub. But that was in the days when demand was reasonable and distribution was understandable as a consumer.

I paid retail for a 2016 116520 to be had immediately. Amazing watch. And more unique without ceramic. The Daytona C wait game is a bit much for my tastes

I'd pay in full with a refund after 6 months option in writing, if I needed to show an AD I was serious.

In 2016 the 520 was not difficult to obtain. It was at the end of its run. Most AD's had them sitting in the safe waiting for someone to ask for one or to sell to a repeat customer.

It varies with the ADs business practices. Some ADs will not take your name or a deposit or a full payment because They don’t want to be in a position to not be able to deliver your watch in a resonable time. I’ve met ADs that have two list. The people that want to be on one and the people that made a deposit with a time frame of delivery of 6 months or full refund if you want. I do not know any AD that will hold your money if you decide to back off at any time though. They are not there to cheat anyone. They want to make sure that you are not a tire kicker
My AD keeps 3 lists. Just interested no down payment. Interested with down payment and fully prepaid. All of the lists are explained to you and your position on the list is shown upfront . The list of fully paid is their priority. The list of down payments is serviced after they full prepaid is done and then the no down payment list goes. They do not take more than 3 in the fully paid list so the down payment gets a chance. As you can see from various comments here there are not that many people that are willing to pay for something without having a guarantee of a time frame delivery. That is very good for me that I’m willing to do so. The ADs do not give a guarantee time frame because they can’t. Rolex controls all supply and past supply has no bearing on future supply. Couple of weeks prior to delivery they get a manifest of approved watches to be delivered but even then no dial clarification. For example they might know they getting a SS Daytona or Sky Dweller or Deep sea but since the refrence numbers are the same they don’t know is it the black or white Daytona or the blue or the white or the black Sky Dweller or the James Cameron or the plain black Deep Sea. They have to wait patiently like the rest of us. And this is when they are getting the delivery soon. Beyond that they don’t know when they will get another and what would the regional Rolex representative will allocate to them. That is why they can’t guarantee you anything. The only guarantee is that you will get it as they get it. |

its not a special order piece so no i would not do that. Ive never even put a deposit down for a watch ever. I honestly dont get it as if you pass it sells 2 minutes later to someone else. Im not giving the AD an interest free loan for an unknown period of time. no way.

Not a chance. Dropping $12k in advance and not knowing if you are getting the goods is like giving someone a free loan without a guarantee of re-payment.
To me it would be up there as one of the worst financial decisions anyone can make.

Offered to pay in advance at my AD but they said it would not be necessary. They don't get many per year so that is the reason I have not gotten mine yet. They did tell me they were getting one in soon but was likely a black face. They know I want the white so it's just a matter of time. Luckily I have a SS Daytona so I am not in a hurry.

I paid Full to be in top of the list and received after 7 months. For me it’s worth it.
I could decide the dial and went for the black - I love it |

Paid fully day of Basel release. Had watch in hand 4-5 months later.

It's still just a watch that some people find appealing. I would never pay in full, or in part, for a watch that I was not wearing home.
