Anyone else feel the new block cases lack symmetry?
I know this sort of question probably came up a lot earlier, but in the market for new watch after some time on sidelines. I Tried on new sub c today, I really wanted to like it, but the lines and aesthetics of the case, lugs, bracelet just didn't look as symmetrical as the previous version. It jut looked blocky on my wrist. I kept looking at the "older" yachtmaster ss/pt in the case and sub no date which were singing to me much more loudly.
I love the new clasp, blue lume and respect the new in house movement, but the design change left me a little cold, and likely my next purchase will be a stamped clasp, 20 year old design, but that's what my eye likes. I appreciate a lot of forum members are thrilled with the new versions, and I dont mean to say they aren't great watches, I just felt a bit disappointed. Does this new design grow on you? Did others initially feel same way but come to really appreciate the new designs? |

Maxi cases...
I don't own a newer/larger case model, and I originally did not like the larger size. After trying on a GMT II-C many times I am now a fan. I think the newer GMT is the nicest looking newer case model, but that's just me...The newer model has a better clasp and ceramic bezel insert, though I'm sure others will say they prefer the aluminum bezel insert.

The GMT IIC is certainly a great looking watch with tremendous 'wrist presence'. On the wrist it feels nicely balanced although like all heavy watches, it sits better on a larger wrist than on a small one. I think we don't have to dislike the older models just because we like the newer (or vice versa). As JC says, they both have their good points.
For me, the older models just look 'right' but then I am an 'older model' myself.

Didn't like the new design either, so went for the 14060M a couple of weeks ago. Then came across the GMTIIc in person the other day and I was hooked. The blocky design does take a while to get used to. No regrets on the older sub though.

I like and own the c-sub ...
And also a SD. They are different enough for me to own both. They are both great in their own way.

I absolutely felt the same way initially, but wanted to buy new and liked the upgrades so went with the 116610.
I've had it for about 6 months now and wouldn't think of swapping it. It certainly grew on me more and more. To me, the appearance of the wide lugs is much more pronounced in pictures. |

I much prefer the classic case. I've tried warming up to the new Submariner, the green one in particular, but with the wide lugs and ceramic bezel I just can't. Oh well, there are other watches

I prefer the old school case, own a two liner and LV. Never liked the new maxi case from the numerous pictures on the forum.
In the flesh/steel so to speak the watch presents quite well. Much to my surprise I found I could live with the larger lugs and crown guards, but the shine of the ceramic bezel was too much imho. |

wanted a sea-dweller but then i tried on a gmtIIc and it just blew me away. the difference was just too huge. and then i tried on the subc and i instantly knew that it was the watch i had always wanted.
been happy with it ever since.

I have owned both the GMT IIC as well as the Sub C, and I am not a fan of the super cases. Having said that, I have a real itch for a DSSD, which I am afraid I also will not like. Love the look, for sure, though. But, as of yet, I don't like the super case models on my wrist. Now the new 42mm Explorer II is a different matter, altogether. I absolutely love that watch. Hmmm ... Maybe it's not a super case issue at all, but rather a ceramic thing.

I have to say that when I had a GMTC I just always felt like something was a little off appearance wise. I don't know if that was the PCLs, the Bezel, or the case symmetry, or maybe all three. Anyways, I've tried on a SubDateC, and kind of feel the same way about it, just something is off (I hypothesize this is the supercase and cyclops combo). Seeing a forum members wrist shot of the 114060 has restored my hope though, I think that one looks more balanced on the wrist and just overall it doesn't look as odd with the chunky lugs. Just my two cents.

Gotta say I love the new blocky case. And it looks really good on the wrist, makes the watch look like a 42mm without having to be, so more comfortable to live with but with real presence. Also differentiates it from the numerous invicta style rip offs of the sub. I love the old style sub but I did feel that it needed just a slight update (and major updates to the terrible flimsy tuna can strap, on a £4000+ watch that was ridiculous), in the same way Porsche updates the 911, you don't want/need to completely change a brilliant classic design just modernise it.

No, I don't.
And to echo others, IMHO, both are appealing in their own right. |

I like both old and new, but with a preference for the new
Personally, I think the older designs look best on the vintage models After these, I prefer to fast-forward to the new designs!

The new blocky case looks old fashion to me. I don't see it as a improvement. It is what it is.

Well, I own both, a 16613 and a 116710? Both are comfortable with the 16613 feeling less top heavy and lighter. I think a slightly wider bracelet on the newer case would have looked great but that is not something we have control over.
What I do like is that Rolex has not strayed far with design thus allowing our older models to bear a strong family resemblance. Even though the OP said that his eyes don't like the new more blocky case, I think it is something you easily get used to, like a new pair of jeans. They get more comfortable as you wash them. So it is with the Rolex " big block".

All you super case haters are missing the long term view here.
Wear a Sub C, every 5 years get it serviced and refinished. In 100 years, you'll have the thinner lugs you want, at which time you can really start to appreciate the watch. Something to look forward to. |

Don't understand
No watch is symmetrical when it has a crown on one side only, and only one date window.
