Would you buy a watch on appearance without needing some complications?

In example, say you stay mainly in one timezone, but like the appearance of the BLNR GMT, would you still purchase it knowing the GMT is basically useless to you or look for something else?

I just love my BLNR... the fact it has multi functionality is kind of irrelevant really, imo.

I need at least a date on my watches. I also do a fair amount of traveling between time zones, so the GMT function comes in very handy at those times. I hardly ever use the chrono function, so to me that is not necessary. But if I like the look of the watch and the price is right, I will buy it.

Yes. I own a BLNR -- blue 24 hour hand looks nice, and I appreciate the work it takes to make a true GMT complication.

However, I do not find it useful, even when traveling across time zones.

I change time zones frequently and use my GMT Master to its full potential when doing so, but for looks alone, my DJ2 wins hands down, and as such, is my daily when at home.

Hell yeah, most watches I've purchased were based on appearance. I can't imagine that all the Daytona owners on here own them for lap timing race cars.

Since you're asking for personal opinions, mine is: No. I don't buy complications of zero utility or interest to me.

I'm a function-first guy in all areas of my life. Watch-wise, I sold my dive watches when I stopped diving, I don't use stopwatches, so no chronometers, etc. These days, I've also reached a point where I won't buy a watch I'd otherwise like if I can't see its details (windows, sub-dials, etc.) without my reading glasses.

Complications are part of the lure, the mystique of the machine. I doubt that people buy moon phase and PC's because they have a need for them.

I use the GMT hand as a 24 hour timer. I set it to local time. I love to know military time. So this is a useful complication even if you do not travel.

The complication most people rarely use but is very popular is the chronograph. People like the look.

I frequently use my chrono to time the interval between "is it safe" posts.

If I like the watch I buy it.

A GMT does not need to move to be useful, I use mine because I work for a 24/7 global organization. Time zones are still time zones even if I never leave my cube.

Judging by the comments we get on this Forum, I would say that most of the buyers of watches do not know how or why their watch does anything but show the time.

I use my GMT function a lot. Set it to pacific time zone as my brother lives there and turn the bezel to whatever time zone it is in the place I'm traveling to since I travel a lot

Let's say I go from Hong Kong to Korea. It's an hour later there.

I could set the 24 hour hand to home (HK) time. Then if I see 17, I can subtract 12 to find that it's 5 PM in Hong Kong. Or I could look at the local time of 6 PM and subtract 1 hour.

With knowledge of the time zone difference, the mental math is easy. Without that knowledge, it's impossible to set the 24 hour hand anyway.

Yes it's a cool feature but I can't see anyone "needing" it unless truly a pilot traversing the world. In that case it would be nice to see GMT as a constant reference

Most people buy watches these days without the need of the functions they provide.

Almost no Sub owner goes diving. Most GMT owners aren't pilots or constantly traveling. Milgauss owners aren't all engineers/scientists working in highly magnetic work environments. Explorer owners probably aren't climbing Everest ;).

If you are one of the owners that actually uses the traditional tool purpose of the watch, then people here and watch enthusiasts all over will generally give you a lot of props. It isn't necessary though. There is a lot of romance with these watches.

My iPhone can track all time zones at once and give me the local time too, so I crearly don’t need a watch. I wear one because I like it.

Sure, if I like it I buy it. I've taken the Sub diving, but only because I could, not because I needed to.
