Non traditional watch thread or show me something different.

Watches that have a Case OR Dial other than the traditional or conventional shape or layout.

Often finding something a bit different is a great way to add some diversity to a collection, once you start looking, it can open up a whole new direction for the collector.

Let’s see your watches that don’t look like the others.

Examples non traditional Dial and case...

FP Journe resonance pictured like ALS has many offerings with smaller main dials, also many exotic brands are using the dial as a landscape for creativity while giving the actual time display a small piece of dial real estate. This process has created a tremendous opportunity for the designer to capture the interests of the wearer.

As far as case design goes there are some that we accept as staples in alternative case design. The Cartier tank, the cushion case pictured here (Panerai and Cartier also have many offerings) , the JLC reverso to name a few. I have read that Cartier is the king of non traditional case shapes, the crash watch comes to mind.

Something I learned recently was
Cushion cases will be curved on 4 sides
Tonneau cases (French for barrel) will be curved on the sides but straight at the top and bottom.

The Breguet tradition line or the oval shaped Reine de Naples (based off the first wristwatch ever, made by A.L. Breguet for Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples). Breguet has a tonneau, curved case Heritage line as well.

Non traditional watch thread or show me something different.

I definitely have something different, quirky, vintage, and mechanically interesting to watch change hours !

Wittnauer Futurama 1000, circa 1972, double retrograde jump hour automatic.

Yes this is certainly qualified, interesting and a cool watch!

Where did you come across this? Original buyer or vintage purchase?

It would be a great design for a modern watch

I’ve always had an interest in vintage jump hour watches, but most are 33-34mm, too small for my size. I happened across a photo of a Futurama on Instagram, and started researching them. A YouTube video of both hands jumping and I was hooked. Kept searching vintage watch dealers on line, they are EXTREMELY hard to find, and ran across two at a vintage dealer in TX, Unwindintime.

It has an ETA 2784 high beat 28,800 movement,so service and parts are not issues. Modern wearable at 33mm x 48mm in size and quickset date.

This is great, really cool and different. What a great find.

And as you say, nice to find something like this in a more modern size.

Nice thread, always good to see different things.

Here’s another, almost mainstream at this point but I think it fits the ask.

And don’t forget that old Seiko had some funky cases back in the day. This is the turtle, but there was also the asymmetrical Captain Willard.

I think the Seiko Discus Burger qualifies. If anyone has any leads on one, please let me know. They're tough to track down.

I like the FPJ except for spoiling the symmetry with the PR.

Why put a PR on a watch you would have to wind up every day if not wearing?
