Celebrate a small win : $4,500 to spend
Hello Friends:
Long story short, I received a small promotion at work. I'm looking to get something to mark the occasion. I cant do Rolex, unless its prior to 1988, as I have an allergic reaction to 904L. I miss a leather strap watch after I sold my Panerai. What is currently tempting me: Omega Speedy Sapphire Omega PO B&R-03 92 and a Stowa Fleiger (plus about $1000 to spare) Other things that are on the radar: Birthyear datejust (1985) Tudor Blackbay Comments please..... watches by Joseph Jeram, on Flickr |

Of those, I'd go for the PO. If you want a new one, you can probably find a grey market model at that price, otherwise I would look at the last 42mm version. I like the fit better on my small-ish wrists, it just wears less top-heavy to me. (I personally am on the lookout for an original 2201.50 42mm PO). Good luck, and congrats!

I'm thinking Speedmaster Pro. It works beautifully on leather, but buy it on the bracelet because you might prefer that in the warm months.
$4,500 is an interesting number because there are so many good choices in that range. What are the other watches you wear lately? |

Got my Stowa Flieger a few days ago...great watch.
You absolutely can’t go wrong with a Black Bay either. Good luck with your decision.

No contest here: Speedmaster Professional. It is difficult to believe that you can buy such a superb watch for under $5K. A classic and one of the few watches that can be described as perfect.

Vintage SS 80s Datejust with a linen dial or tapestry. 4.5k easily gets you there.

Daily is a Breitling seawolf of rubber.... other than that I have a Stowa MO for a dress watch. Ive sold my Sub C, and the Pam 422. Untitled by Joseph Jeram, on Flickr Cool Stowa . I used to wear one configured almost exactly the same way, except the case was brushed instead of polished. I had that bracelet, and I also had a Stowa alligator strap in a color they called "Black-Brown" and the Stowa deployant to go with it. Makes one wonder why we go to the trouble to get such cool watches only to trade them away when our eyes wander a bit... |

Almost fell asleep reading this thread!
Celebrate with something special, not run-of-the-mill — Chopard L.U.C. Pro One or 40mm Blancpain FF from 2000 Trilogy series. A Speedy? (pro or otherwise) — I’d sooner watch paint dry than look at one of those! |

Despite what that guy said, I’d certainly consider a speedy. It’s iconic, useful, perfectly proportioned, reliable, easily legible...need I go on? If you want something a bit more unique, there are countless speedy variants that fit your budget that will add some personality. The new Omega Seamaster 300 would be a great choice for you as well. Amazing watch for the money.

How about a simple 3 hand model Breitling Superocean Heritage with the Tudor movement?

Thanks all. I’m really torn.
I have a dream list of what my watch box will look like in 10 years, and these are all on it. I just don’t know what one to do first. Joe |

I like the Datejust idea, should be able to get something pretty nice for that budget.

I would definitely go with the Speedmaster "sapphire sandwich" on a bracelet and add a leather strap or two on an Omega buckle or deployant at a later date. No matter what your collection may look like in the future, the Speedmaster will always have a place and I can't think of a better watch for under $5,000, or even more. There's a reason the classics are the classics. You could always add a Stowa Fleiger at a later date and if you can't wear a modern Rolex, Omega and Tudor have you covered for superb divers and GMTs.

I have always been a Rolex guy, and never really got attracted to the Omega brand, even though the speedmaster has so much history, never found the watch to be that exciting... a few weeks ago I acquired one, it hasn’t left my wrist since. great watch, very comfortable, perfectly balanced, and very elegant as well. Highly recommended it. The Tudor GMT is a great watch as well, the insert is simply mesmerizing, it is the perfect blend between a Pepsi and a coke, depending on lighting conditions. And the quality is on par with any rolexes.

Speedmaster Professional is the most versatile and the history it has pushes it to the top in my opinion.
Rolex Datejust is a pretty fantastic piece as well - very understated and underrated.

For me it’s a Grand Seiko at that price point. Love them.
