Why doesn't Patek update the Aquanaut?

I was wondering whether the aquanaut would look better without the markers around the dial, and only the numerals could be made a bit bigger and moved to the outside of the dial, taking the place of the markers. I think it would modernize the timepiece big time. Can anyone with good photoshop skills try to achieve that?

It was updated in 2011. It used to be a 35mm case, then in 2011 they made it to the now larger 40mm case. Patek isn't like the car industry changing the model style every 5-6 years. Besides I quite like the double hour markers, it makes the watch a lot more legible at night, opposed to my 5711, which is very hard to see unless the lume is fully charged.

They did this year...5168g. Didn't really do much as expected.

I would say the blue dial and WG metal are major changes. They did a limited edition blue dial for the Japanese market ~ 10 years ago on the former Aquanaut. However the new blue dial Aquanaut looks quite nice and should be quite popular.

so what you are really saying then is that in 10 years a regular production model 5522 will happen

With Patek, you never know what they will do in 5-10 years

Who would have thought they would bring back LE 5970/5070/etc for the London Grand Exhibition after these references were officially "retired"?

They've been "updating" it a lot. 5164 in 2014?, new white gold regular production and Advanced Research this year. There are rumors of a regular production aquanaut chrono for the future.

If the 5168 is a big hit it might lead to larger Aquas, esp a chrono.

If it's a big hit? When it becomes a big hit.

Exactly! I love the slim highly finished stylish designs that PP executes throughout the sport lineup but do crave the larger size for my largish wrist.

The 5167 fit my 7.33-7.5" wrist really well but it easily could have been 2-4mm larger without taking away from its overall feel/look just like the 5168 and new LE Calatrava. It's just hard for PP to produce larger watches since it's not really in their heritage but they also understand such pieces will have their place by enough followers that sales aren't the issue. Gradually slipping them out is what appears to be their agenda IMO.

I generally agree. I don't really think they will be messing with the dial or anything like the OP suggested though.

I'd really like a 5168

Would look sick with a midnight blue blazer and crisp white shirt

Quite happy with my 5167R, it's THE AQUA for me, couldn't care less if they do others, but can't say they didn't update them

For me, it's hard to imagine what I would want Patek to upgrade in the 5167. It ticks all the right boxes for me - slim case profile, perfectly legible dial, screw down crown, comfy bracelet, secure clasp and is the perfect size for someone like me with 6.5" wrists. They pretty much fixed all I didn't like about the predecessor 5065.

The 5168 does look pretty awesome - but I see no reason to upsize from a 5167 when it fits me like a glove.

5167 is just an explorer for those who appreciate quality and have the where with all to be able to afford the luxury.
ah its just lust on my part though.

Who cares about updating the Aquanaut. How about the 5196 at 38mm, larger movement and a see through caseback. That's the watch I'm seriously looking forward to.

I do agree that it's an amazing watch - just curious about seeing it without the white markers could be pretty interesting!

No offense but how small is your wrist? It looks like a toothpick compared to mine. The Aqua stands out nicely on your wrist because of this so wear it in great health for sure!

As for updates. Eventually the design will change. May not be for years but nothing is forever. i would never compare this watch to a Rolex Explorer. Not even close in looks, quality plus aquanaut has a date and is available in different complications.

For sure wrist size can affect the look of the watch. If you have a super thick wrist no doubt the aquanaut will look miniature. Up to you to decide if that looks ok. Some guys need over 40mm such as a Rolex SD43. There are plenty of good options. AP RO diver etc., may be better though not a direct competitor. Still super nice watches.

Am hoping the 5168g's popularity leads to a rose-gold black dial/strap version down the road. Till then am sticking with my 5164r.

If the 5167 got much bigger it would really throw the proportions off. Larger watches with thin cases look very odd to me and typically don't sit well on the wrist.

They should update the women's version of this watch first.

I don't understand why they are still using the outdated strap and dial on those.

I could see them bumping it up 2mm. Remember the 5165? The 5167 is the exact same watch, just 2mm larger.

That green strap looks awesome. Perfectly complements the slightest tint of olive you get from dial in some angles.
