I’ll give it a different twist:
To me, I am sure they are at least equally good. But often it’s not so much how great they are new, or when they are gently used, but which one do you think will look/work best 30 years from now? Frankly, if I look back 30 years + at both brands, I’ll put my money on Rolex. |

James Bond wore both.
Maybe the better debate is speedmaster vs daytona. |

I have 2 SM, a 2254.50 which I wear a ton and I don't think anyone has ever noticed and an AT which is much more blingy and I see people looking, but no one has ever commented. I've only received one compliment on my ROLEX in the last year though as well.

If the Omega brand is as prestigious as the Rolex brand, Omega watches would probably be scarce by now with prices unbelievably high.

Unfortunately the answer to the OP question is no.
It has nothing to do with the quality or technical credentials of the watch, it's actually Omega's own fault. To be as prestigious, the Seamaster would need to become a classic first. We all know about the countless limited editions that will unavoidably come, and the Bond tie-in versions... Omega will dilute the identity of the new Seamaster in no time. I keep reading about it being a "Sub killer". IMO, in a couple of years we will not be talking about the SMP300 anymore, and the Sub will still be well alive and kicking. |

No chance. But, who cares? Rolex is more "prestigious" than Laurent Ferrier. More prestigious than Lange.
To me, "prestige" is overrated in most anything in life. It doesn't guarantee quality, performance or even price. It only guarantees that your average non-enthusiast recognizes your purchase. If that matters to you, great. If not, buy what you love. Buy the better watch and be thankful a bunch of status-seaking nonothings aren't driving up the price and causing 5-year long waitlists.

Ive had both a Seamaster SMPc 300 and now a 14060m.
To me its comparing Android to Apple. The Iphone basically stays the same, offers less function than samsung, and is more expensive. But its an iconic piece and that holds weight in its own right. The SMPc was a great watch to own and it felt more robust than my 14060 and was less expensive to own at the time ($2600 Grey market. now its $3700 on Joma for the prior model). I think the blue SMPc is iconic in its own right as a Bond watch. I think with Omega you get more bang for your buck but you also have to ask what youre comfortable with. At this point Omega is just a brand thats part of Swatch and theyre not who they used to be. Omega is Chevrolet. A part of GM built to compete with Ford. Rolex is Ford. The original, the stand alone. the OG. A SMPc is a Silverado chasing an F150 A SMPc is a Samsun Chasing an iPhone A SMPc is Pepsi Chasing Coke Its CVS Chasing Wal Greens. Its a Plycraft Lounge chair chasing an Eames It's a Pendleton GNP Blanket chasing a Hudson Bay. All of these are great in their own right but theyre not "The Brand" and those Brands that are "it" are it for a reason. Often imitated but never duplicated. So yeah, a SMPc is great. But is it a Sub? no and for a few reasons. Stop comparing it and just enjoy it is what I would say. Personally though, if Tudor could get all of their models BB58 thin or BB36/41 Thin I would pick one of those over an Omega. the only Omega I pick over Rolex is a Speedy. There they have Rolex Beat for the same reasons Rolex has them beat in the dive watch category |

Depends how you define "prestigious" If by brand recognition, probably Rolex holds the edge.
If purely as a watch, the new SMP 300 is without doubt the better watch.

In paper, the specs of the new SMP are impressive. But let's not forget that these are all new movements. They still have to prove their long term reliability., while the 3135 has proved to be a very reliable machine for more than 30 years. Besides I can't help but feel that Omega is pushing their coaxial escapement down our throats for no other reason than just being different.... This is not to say that the SMP is not an excellent watch, but IMO better is very subjective. |

In the eyes of most people, Rolex is a more prestigious brand. Deserved? Who knows. Rolex watches are more expensive so there is a natural tendency to think they're better.
For me though, it's all about my own personal preference. Design and functionality over brand name. Like a lot of people I have both Omegas and a Rolex.

I don’t think it’s as prestigious but I do like prefer my omega James Bond skyfall edition over a basic looking submariner

e.g. the old Beta vs. VHS tape format - one was superior, one wasn't, the superior one didn't win - perception and brand taints our thinking.

I own a Hulk, but am lusting after a new Blue SMPc. I think its all personal preference, one thing I really love about my Omegas is they are most times not recognized unlike my Subs which everyone knows the crown logo, especially the submariner by design alone.

Ask a person who has no preconceived bias and they would likely say they are on the same plain.
Ask this on a Rolex forum and you will see a heavy bias toward the Rolex and vice versa on the Omega forum.

No way. Sorry. I respect Omega and it's one of my favorite brands, but if they really want a watch to compete and have the same prestige as a Rolex Submariner, all they have to do is ditch the rest and release just one 40mm divers watch with no extraordinary looks, no waves, no icebergs, no sand or clouds on the dial, just black and white would be perfect without any kind of fake patina of course, normal hands would help (could be sword hands no problem), put it in a brushed thin case without too much decoration, plain solid caseback, a normal looking bracelet (could be the one used on Speedy) with adjustable clasp and then hold on to that simple design for the next fifty years. Easy task if well planned. They had a chance with the 2254.50 (around 20 years wasted), then the second chance with the PO 2201.50 (another 15 years) so now I'm not sure if they really want this competition to take place.

As someone who grew up poor, these threads always make me laugh. You are comparing one multi-thousand dollar watch to another multi-thousand dollar watch. Buy what you like and enjoy it. Who cares if someone else views the other as more "prestigious?"
