Nikon D850 meet Daytona..

Nikons latest effort has an automated focus stacking feature, handy for watches, it takes a series of pics at different focal lengths then you merge them together in photoshop. Just a quick test, first day with camera. I'm looking forward to having more of a play with it :)

I've only had it since Thursday afternoon, but I could fill a page already. Briefly..

I've been shooting a combo of D810/D4s for the last few years. I thought this would replace both. I don't think it will as it turns out, but the D810 is definitely going as soon as this thing works with Camera Control Pro (which it already should, just an early adopter issue)
It's a very nice camera to operate. Must have some serious processing power, reviewing images on rear screen smooth and fast - touch screen viewing pics tap to zoom in / out flick left / right to browse - no stutter, no lag. Sensor seems good so far. Haven't used it at work yet, will start on Monday, but I scanned a colour neg and converted using my usual process in Photoshop and the orange mask was corrected out far more easily than normal - this is a very good sign for colour depth. Highlight retention seems exceptional. Any noise is mainly luma - also very promising. Optical viewfinder is very nice. Time will tell, but so far so good!

Ugh, thinking about it this place is probably crawling with pros - posting a quick stack shot complete with bad edges and blurry bits now making me embarrassed! In my defence I usually shoot things from person size and upwards, fiddling around with little things far too difficult - Jocke has lots of my respect!

Anyway, will you post the results here somewhere? I like to see stuff shot on film :)

Hi
It was with a 50mm lens. I was going to use my 60mm Micro lens, but its the 'd' version, which as it turns out is not compatible with automated focus stacking. So it goes! All the other shots on here showing this Daytona are with the 60mm Micro, except one where its sitting over a lens - that was a different system altogether - Hasselblad 150mm with an extension tube recorded on a P25 back - oldy but a goody!

Ha! I had my own macro issues today not being compatible with the new red side handle, that's pretty funny!

Thank you for the info!!
I said if i take some more time to learn about photography, I will treat myself to D850. But as a noob and just a hobby I can't justify it just yet.
I could barely justify buying the 24-70mm and 105mm micro this week, but i did (i really wanted to capture that crown in glass hahahaha and i did!!)

It's an art and science on its own and i admire your (all of you pros and serious hobbyists) knowledge and skills. Your photo is amazing!

Smart move, bodies come and go, but lenses stick around. You never regret buying good glass :)

Tedwin,

any updates? :D

I put myself on the waiting list.

It seems like this camera is as hard to get as a SS Daytona

Hi

They are on the shelves here in NZ now, so I'm sure they will be easily available shortly, if not already.

Nothing new to say really. Definitely the best digital camera I have ever owned, but a lot of that for me is small improvements, little things like the redesigned prism housing now clearing the knobs on the 24mm T-S lens, having touch control on the screen, being able to shoot with electronic shutter silently during live view (great for no camera shake - although it won't trigger a flash in this setup) The files are just that bit better regards colour and DR in every way than the D810 I think. Although I've been happy with AF performance and image quality for years.

I have recently put my MF digital kit up for sale, but that has as more to do with the performance of the new 105mm f1.4 and 28mm f1.4 than the D850!

Thank you very much!!

This will be my first FX and i am beyond excited.
As it seems, my D5300 has some issues, so it's totally justified that i buy this one :)

Glad to hear you have no regrets!!!

Thank you again,

t.
