No way would I relume a dial. Has the dial pictured been relumed already? It looks as though it may have been.

I should clarify,it has been re-lumed

Would people stay clear of this,or accept it as still being original?

Personally, I stay away from relumed/refinished dials. However, if the deal is good enough, you may want to buy it and wait until the right dial comes along and switch the dial out. Also, if you don't have a problem with a relumed dial, take what everyone (including me) says with a grain of salt and do your thing.

I would not steer clear but I would not accept it as original either.
PRICE PRICE PRICE it all boils down to what you can get it for.Re-lumed is not original and does not go for the same as an original.A correct dial and hands can cost anywhere from $400-$900 ballpark. They say in vintage all the money is in the dial.Do your homework this is where may people fail.Look at the serial number. Is it for a red dial or white dial 1680?When buying a vintage watch allot of things are a factor but they all work out for the right price.

+1 ---- also IMHO it may be better to wait for a correct original dial, they are out there, I've learnt do not go for the first one you see. bide your time and continue looking, that's half the fun!!

Reluming will have an impact on the value of the watch. As stated, it all boils down to price and what you could get a correct era dial/hands combo for.

Patience is always a virtue.

If it is original, and this one may be, you don't want to get it re-lumed if you want it to stay as an original..

But there are options...

If you want to wear the watch and hold off any further degradation of the original dial, you need to track down a suitable service replacement and put the original away in a dry quality container where it can become part of the "package".

Value, in descending order: (not everybody agrees)

Original
era correct service replacement trit
late service replacement Luminova
quality refinish
Authentic, but not period/service correct.

This may not matter as much if the watch is not a desired or soon to be valuable classic such as a basic late model white 1680. also, a quality refinish is better than a destroyed original..

Thank you all for the input

I have had many vintage watches in the past, however the supply here in Canada is short and when I am offered one it is at a premium.I just got a nice 69 5513 so I thought I was on a role.My gut and the feedback both say the same ,be patient.
thanks
paul

Icon11 Down to Price

At the end of the day go with your instinct - if you buy it somebody else will too when you sell. An original dial is just something thats going to cost more. I've just bought a re-lumed 1680 red submariner for £4900 from a Berlin dealer and the watch is fantastic. If and when I ever sell it (unlikely as my son will be getting it as his inheritance) then its going to worth a lot to him so it won't matter then.....

Go on, you know you want to!

I have been buying and selling rolexs for 15 years always kept one or two for myself.I have recently with the downward prices started to keep more around. Here are the most recent purchases.
