Need a Rolex in that gator pic to start an 'is it safe' thread! That would be hilarious.

Not unusual at all to see 8-10' gators, and occasionally 12'. I live near Myakka State Park (Sarasota)and they are common. Hard to tell from the camera angle how large the gator is. We also have crocs but thankfully they are fairly rare and nowhere near the size of their Australian cousins. A few years back I was fishing out of my kayak for bass and after catching a few noticed I had a large friend 15' away watching. I moved and she followed. Decided it was time to leave - didn't feel like losing an arm when I went to unhook a bass. But thankfully incidents are rare especially given how often people are in close proximity.

Lived in Miami for my first 27 years, never disliked the Gators there - the ones in Gainesville were really hated by true 'Canes, though...

I think a medium sized gator can get up to 35 mph for a short sprint. They can't stay at that speed except for a minute or two usually and they do climb. They usually don't harm people especially on land like that. They hunt from hiding in the water.

I've walked that exact spot many times. They have some big boys at that preserve. During the mating season the alligators have a really deep guttural growl while you are walking the trails which sounds otherworldly and almost makes you feel like the ground is shaking. It's pretty dense swamp in many areas and you can't see the gators and I often wonder what the first explorers thought when they heard them but couldn't see them . They must have thought their end was near.

He is also well fed! They don't get that big by eating scraps.

Not sure he can run that fast. But I wouldn't want to risk it. I'm in Louisiana. We have a lot here. Pretty common for nuisance gators to show up in back yards and drive ways. They like to eat dogs.

I've seen this guy in person. He lives at Alligator Adventure in Myrtle Beach, SC. Born in 1964 I think. Somewhere between 18-20 feet. His name is Utan and he is a crocodile from Thailand.

I am also from the Sarasota area and spent lots of time in the myakka swamp, saw lots of giants deep in that swamp. Once I was hog hunting and about to take a full grown feral hog( the swamp is loaded with hogs, they are wreaking havok on the swamp) when out of no where whammmmm!!! A massive bull gator grabbed him first . Gators drowned their pray to see a full grown hog disappear in seconds and all the blood in the water....... one moment you are the top of the feeding chain and the next you realize you aren't even close.
I can tell you I never trust any body of water I've seen gators in salt water, they go where the food is
