Chipped dial on a 16800

Should I keep this watch? The chip is hardly noticeable at all, I mean you have to look at it in the right light/angle to see it. I just bought it, and I'm admittedly smitten by it. The seller has been really easy to deal with and said he would return or drop the price a little, I beat him up pretty good on the price already ( bought it for 5500). I always wanted a matte dial, and doubt that I will sell it. But if I ever did sell, I would at least want to break even. The hands and dial match perfect with a creamy patina that is just right. What would you do? I think it is still worth it for 5350.00, but I don't want my heart in the decision. The chip is at 26-27 min. Thanks

I'm just not sure what to think, I know the dial is most of the value. Is it worth significantly less than the price I paid?

Don, any chance you can post a closeup of the chip itself?

I wouldn't mind it at all. Wear it and enjoy.

I don't see that damage ruining the value. It is a nice wearable Submariner in good condition.

As said.. I wouldn't personnaly mind on that watch. If you are bothered without reading others opinion; then sell it and find a perfect one. If you aren't bothered. Enjoy!

If I decide to keep the watch, can anyone recommend a watch maker with a lot of experience handling vintage dials? Just to keep it from getting worse.

How often do matte dials chip? Do they all tend to be fragile, or was this just handled poorly?

It gets worse by taking it out of the case so just leave it be unless you want to service it. Certain dial versions chip easier than others and I guess this is a common problem with these. Other dials that easily chip are red subs and double red dwellers.

I think this type of chip along the edge is sort of common, actually. From the movement being rotated and removed during service. For the price paid, I wouldn't give it a second thought.

OK. Thanks for all of the advice, I'm leaning towards keeping it.

It's probably where the dial sat against the rehaut originally. Every watch dial will get marked when it is installed against the rehaut.

I would keep the watch. Very common on vintage sports Rolex with matte dial since the dial is turned and pressed against the case.
