Almost scammed story
I figure I should pass this one along. I was the low bidder on a Tudor 89190-- it was being sold by an ebay seller with very good and very recent feedback..in Russia. (I know). After the sale ended, in haste, I pretty much immediately paid for the watch with paypal- and about 10 seconds later SCAM alarms went off in my head. Sure enough, I went back and the pics were actually of different watches (from pic to pic). So now what!!
I put an immediate dispute in with both Paypal and Ebay. I tried contacting the seller but of course no answer. Paypal was holding the money still- so the risk of losing it seemed to be reduced quite a bit. After numerous attempts to contact the seller, I got no response. I contacted paypal, who assured me that the money was definitely not being released until an investigation. Right after this, Ebay deleted the item-- apparently the must have had firm knowledge that the ebay account had been hijacked. (This hijacked account had positive feedback from as recent as a few days prior- and was a pretty active seller >300 ratings) After ebay deleted it, Paypal refunded. If ebay had not deleted it, I think it was going to get a lot more complicated-Paypal told me at least seven days before they even look at the next step. I still think I was going to be protected by Paypal, although the guy there told me I was very lucky to have caught this so fast..... which made me think they must have a million ways of worming out of a fraudulent transaction. I have had a few purchases from Russia that went ok- and I don't even necessarily know if that was a factor here-- but who knows. I just thought I should pass this along- first don't be an idiot like I was not even noticing that the pics were different- and second- make sure to follow your gut -- that is really what saved me here (although gut was a little slow). This was a $1200 transaction so it wasn't a huge amount and it made me think they might be fishing at that lower dollar level as people might be less suspicious. |
