As a former deckhand on a commercial fishing boat...

I love other peoples boats. Help you prep the boat before. Do what you need during and stay after docking to help you clean up.

Own one? Never! When can we go?

John,

That suspiciously looks like Pleasant Harbor! I had my 28ft Chaparral there before moving over to Scorpion Bay....then I sold it!

I can see the allure, but not for me. Too fair skinned.

I live on water and boat everyday. Just bought a new 2016 Sea Ray 240 Sundeck to replace my 2007.

Had one since 2008 which I purchased new from NY boat show. 38 feet, IPS drives, the works...dumbest mistake I've ever made and finally sold it at the end of last year. You don't know how many times I wished that boat would sink at the marina!

Has anyone tried to life on a boat instead of in a house or apartment? I ask because I am wondering if that would make the cost of ownership more worthwhile.

Never tried it - might consider it if I ever win the Powerball - but for living on a boat you gonna need some feet . . . and $$$$

My parents spent their summers on a 34' Hunter on Lake Michigan for years. They enjoyed it. But the annual maintenance and mooring fees were more than the mortgage and taxes on my small farm in Arkansas. And, their life wasn't as easy on the boat as it is at a fixed dwelling. They sold the boat when they got into their early sixties because they couldn't manage all the work involved to keep it in shape.

Interesting thread, we never owned a boat, but years ago considered buying but decided that we just wouldn't use it enough to justify.

It seems to me boating is a lifestyle, if you grew up in it, or love it, you do it all the time. For others that occasionally boat it does seem pretty complicated and the boat's sale day is a highlight.

Learned to walk on a boat. Caught my first fish when I was 3. Been a licensed captain up to 50 tons for the last 13 years. We just moved up from a 2001 30' Albemarle Express to a 36' Albemarle Express. We also have a 21' center console we kick around the bay with. Probably the one thing I was born to do. I do offshore fishing and some light commercial.

Being a captain and owner a boat I can say that it's a lot of work. You thought cars were tough? Boat is a whole other animal.

48 qts of oil per change, 575 gallons of diesel in the tank, just did some work to our Onan 9kw diesel genset. We pulled both 300hp diesels out of our old boat. I've rebuilt cooling systems, raw water pumps, pulled generators out of boats, fuel systems, etc. You save a lot of money being the mechanic as well as the captain but I've given up a significant chunk of my life working on boats lol

I do enjoy it though.

To put it bluntly: You will get bent over sideways if you pay people to work on your boat.

Diesel tech price for oil change: $1300
My price for an oil change: $185 in parts

Marina cost to fix a bilge pump: $400
My cost to fix a bilge pump: $50 for the parts and an hour of my time
