IMHO The grey area starts around 827xx and up for the change.Anything over 87xxx should be glossy.Matte has been found as high as 87xx and glossy as early as 831x
What serial number is the 1 in question? Post a pic of the dial.
The 1st batch or year of the WG dials spider cracked badly. After 89xx I havnt seen a spider dial

The 5513 in question's serial is 850XXXX. I just acquired it. There is a replacement dial on it, which is matte.

Post a pic. It is in a range where there are both documented original matte and WG dials

Here are a couple of photos. Remember the current Maxi dial you see here is a replacement. Thanks

Mark,

The general rule is 1984-85 which is right in line with Nikos' serial number range. With Rolex nothing is set in stone and crossover is normal as Rolex wastes nothing.

The mid 80's references did experience a problem with "spidering" due to a flaw in the paint mixture and many of these dials were replaced. Again Rolex used what was available and certainly maxi dials used at first on 5.5 mil to 6.75ish 5513s were also used as replacement dials. (on serial numbers much eariler than yours).
