Thoughts on DayDate Tridor
My FIL own a few tridors bought new back in the 80s.. he told me back in the days the tridor was the flagship of all Rolexes. It retail price back then he can easily buy a couple of Daytona/Sub for a single tridor..
I did a search online I am quite shock to find they worth so little in terms of today’s market value! Anyone here own the Tridor DD36?? Do kindly share your thoughts! Cheers and HAGWE! J |

“A few Tridors” - !?!? And I thought my collection was narrow!
Two-tones (and similar like the Tridor) were very hot in the 80s, fell out of favor, and now seem to be on the rebound (presumably among a generation not scarred by memories of a decade of hideous chrome-&-brass bath and kitchen fixtures). The 36mm size is considered smallish these days, but imo 36mm remains THE classic Day-Date. Your FIL is correct that Tridors brought quite a hefty price premium when new, even over other, ‘regular’ 18K Day-Dates. Presumably because of that, they were never a big seller, so it is perhaps a little surprising that they don’t command much of a premium now ... but they are 36mm, and considered only as ‘dress’ watches by many, and thus they don’t currently get folks their warm & fuzzy envy fix on Insta. Tastes will surely change at some point - I’d guess that a Tridor may have more potential for future appreciation than a regular yellow gold/champagne dial model ... but my crystal ball is out of commission, no one can know for sure. I haven’t owned a Tridor (yet), but doubtless I will when the right one crosses my path. (I have noticed that sellers often crank up the color contrast in photos of Tridors - IRL the rose gold stripe is not so noticeable.) What color/etc. dials does he have on his Tridors? (Photos are welcome.) I’ve noticed there seem to be quite a lot of them with pinkish/salmon-colored diamond dials. BTW, if he happens to have one with a gray Tapestry (vertical stripes) dial without diamonds, and wants to sell ... |

Day-date is a niche model....and tridor was/is a very niche model. Expensive and, also, not everyone's cup of tea.
It looked similar to a 2tone DJ to an untrained eye. Not something the general public would go for. YG was always the no1 seller for DD. Very few people know what a tridor is.....

Love the Tridor, was actively on my radar while I was looking but never found one that met my criteria.
If I found the right one, I'd grab it in a flash. |

If Rolex released a Tridor DD in 40mm, I would buy it in a second. The 36mm is too small for my taste, otherwise it would be on my radar.

I looked at one the other day - I love 36mm, I love the less popular models - but I just can't get on board. The colours just don't pop enough to differentiate it from the TT at a glance; I don't work in metal so can't really appreciate the difficulty in production and love it for that, so I'm left with "Do I love the look personally". And IMO it's too muted. Each to his own.
