How to identify without looking at the back?

I look to the top of the 8. If flattened, them likely red back. Not 100% but close. Other way to know is to look at the back:)

is the flattened 8 the only tell that it's a red back?

Yes I think on the Red back insert it is pointed on the inside of the four and on Blue back inserts it tends to have a flat/flatter section in it.

The insert on my watch has a red back and a little flat on the 4, so on a blue back the flatness is more pronounced?

This is the same watch but with the insert I swapped out, it is also a red back insert with a pronounce flat bit on the 4... I'm confused

Indeed but the style and thickness of font would put this as a 16750 insert in my opinion. As with all things Vintage there are exceptions and overlaps but you are correct it is very confusing and the easiest way is to look at the reverse and font style. Basically clear as mud!!

Clear as mud sums it up quite nicely! Thanks Lee for the pointers, I learned something here today.. I think The consensus (2-1) is that the insert at the top of the page has a blue back. We I'll find out in a couple of days when it gets here

I'd be shocked if it is blue. It looks like a red-back to me.

The 8s are what I look at first. The top hole in the "8" is oval shaped on the red backs. The later red-backs have a round opening in the top hole.

Yes 100% agree but the OP did ask if there was any other way other than the 8's. I would also say the insert in the first pic will probably be a Red back.

Sorry to interrupt the discussion, but trying to learn something here...
Why does it matter if the insert is a red or blue back ? Thanks for your patience. |

To me it looks like a blue back 16750. I’m however not too good with later watches so I could be wrong.
Enjoy your new insert |

Looks like Per got it right! I saw this on a local auction site and pegged it as a well kept red back insert, I put a reasonable bid in but as there was so little interest I picked it at a very reasonable price. When I opened the packet this morning the truth was revealed.... a blue back insert
Well just goes to show that the Vintage Rolex world is comprised of nuances and subleties, most of why lie beyond my understanding. The pics below show my new insert beside beside an older red backed insert I have saved in a parts tin. I chose that particular red backed insert as it appears to fly in the face of all the all the pointers received in this thread and also because it's the only one I have... |
