Air King "Explorer Dial" - is there such a thing?

Came across a seller claiming this is an Air King Reference 5504 "Explorer Dial".

I have never seen one of these so not sure if this is a legitimate piece or whether its a Franken? Shouldn't it include the text "Super Precision" on the face of the dial? Would love to hear your thoughts as I really can't make sense of it.

Here's a link to the seller's site.

No direct link possible, but if you look under Explore you can find it there.

I'm pretty convinced this is a hybrid model but if anyone thinks otherwise, please let me know.

This is a 1960 Rolex Air-King Precision fitted with a refinished / after-market dial & hands.

It did not leave the Rolex factory like this.

There was a Rolex Explorer ref. 5500 with black dial and Mercedes hands, but this is not one!

Rolex 5504 with Explorer Dial exist

But like Mike say it is pretty strange!

Can we have a photo of the serial between the lugs?

This is a 5504 from HQMilton

The Dial is similar to the Rolex "Commando" but the reference is different.

I read the 5500 from inside the case back.

The 5504 is a 36mm case diameter.

The 5500 is a 34mm case diameter.

So a 5504 with 5500 case back should not be feasible...

The pictures in the link are the only ones that are there, so unfortunately nothing related to serial no between lugs.

If in doubt, stay away from these Air King Explorers.

Or consult experts like Eric!
