I'm not saying don't trade the GMT. But before you go to a PAM, make sure you try it on and test drive it. PAMs look cool both in pics and in the store. But it's only when you put it on and wear it for awhile that you're going to know if it's right for you. If you still like it after that, then go for it.

You wouldn't buy clothes without first trying them on to see if they fit and you like them on you as well as on the rack. Same with watches.
Good post Ed, very true and wise.

I've done quite a few trades too Amanda, although not NEARLY as many as Daren There's just a certain element of trust involved. I won't deal with someone I don't know from the forums, and who I know is invested enough in the community NOT to be dishonest. The old saying, "buy the seller" holds here.
Cheers,
Bruce

Hey Amanda,

As the guys have said buy the trader before the watch. The other thing is if you do an overseas trade the old customs duties and taxes may raise their ugly head.

I have sold a few Rolex watches to the States and not once have they been stopped.I never wrongly marked them and always declared the correct value.I figure the best policy is to play it right, that way you can sleep at night, especially if they are intercepted.I am not sure if the US has duties etc but Australia on declared items via mail have customs duties and GST payable (Including the freight)

As for sending,I always use Australia Post with registered mail and insure the item for the full value.

I might suggest to check a few Aussie dealers first as it makes it less traumatic.Dennis at The Watchclub (Melbourne) or Nick at The Clockmaker (Sydney) both have Pannerai from time to time. Both are reputable and trustworthy.

Best of luck,

Aaron

Atomic - This is EXACTLY what has happened to me. I had lusted after several watches before setting on the GMT but before I got it home even, I was starting to discover Panerai... and yes the itch is itchy big time! I too wish I had have looked around just that little big longer.

Rockrolex - I'll definitely be trying some Pams on... I am going to the local ADs Panerai 2006-2007 catologue night on Nov 16, perfect time to girl-handle the watches! I'll know more when I walk away after that night.

AJC - The Aussie second hand watch dealers are very expensive, that would be the only reason I'd avoid them. What happens if US Customs do seize a Rolex? Do they return it to the sender? I have heard of this happening on the TZ forum. Or is that only BNIB Rolex they are after???

A Trade might not be the best course of action for me in the end, a brand new from AD 111 or 112 PAM is $5kAU - I can do that (with sale of the GMT) and really, to buy at least one from an AD would be a hell of a buzz

Big to you, Amanda, for going about this in a wholly level-headed, clear thinking way. I agree with all of the guys above too - this is an enjoyable (if at time, trivial) pursuit, so why not enjoy it and take to opportunity to own as many different watches as possible?

If you want it...... do it. But, I can offer this: take the time to think about it for a while. If you still want it after that.... certainly do it!

Buying from overseas and shipping hear can get rather costly, and I'm starting to think that it might be that you end up paying a few hundred less, but you get something that is maybe not as new. If you can bargain a bit with an AD I think it may be better in the end. And if worst comes to worst.... you can always flip the watch after a few months, and get something new!

That's my rusty 2c.... Good luck

Hi Amanda,

First, let me say for the record that I love your Rolex GMT II. Extremely cool watch, especially for a young lady. I am not familiar with Panerai however. Which model were you interested in and why?

Amanda, how about getting one of those really wide watch straps that look like a seat belt? Or maybe wear the watch on a cord around your neck?

I have seen the Panerai watches, they are far down my list, I have a few others to secure first....

Or just get a Timex, because they are as COMMON as a Rolex.

Kokomo is paradise JJ. For me, that means white sands, tiki bars on the beach, palm trees, an aqua blue ocean and big waves everyday and getting dressed up means wearing a hawaiian shirt with your board shorts and flip-flops. AD's and sheep have no place there. You can visit, of course, but the shorts and singlet thing will have to saty behind
