Allergy to TI?

Hi guys,

My 26480ti is my first titanium watch, everytime I wear it, I got a delayed urticaria around my wrist (it starts from the wrist then tickles down to body) - usually within 10-20 mins. (Did a MELISA test which shown higher sensitivity towards Ti but not allergy level) - it will be around for a day and dissapear. i didnt wear it for a couple of days, and as soon as i strapped it on, it comes back within 10 mins or so ( 3 weeks, 4 tries)

Anyone have experience this or have information if there is also copper compound mixed into AP Ti watches?

For now my options is to either replace this with another piece or ride it out.

Thanks!

That's really interesting as titanium is very hypoallergenic. Perhaps it would be worth it to contact AP and inquire if they use any nickle or cobalt in their Ti alloy for this model? I know those two medals can be much more reactive to sensitive skin.

Do you get the same reaction where the watch case rests on your wrist or only the volar (underside) where the clasp is?

Seems like it start from where the buckle is. Then the rash goes through everywhere.

Yeah that was my thought, it gets worse lately within 5 mins of wearing, i would have hive all over my arm, and then goes to my entire body, took it off, hives disappear (although sometimes delayed reaction happens soon after). Tried both hands (left and right)

I initially thought it was the rubber strap, changed to leather, same thing. This sucks so bad as it is my fav watch to date.

Will try to ping AP

Yes, most alloyed metals can produce allergic reaction. Over time, very fine particles are released which can be allergens. For titanium, this is especially noticed in aerospace workers and in people who have received titanium dental implants. Reactions usually include the potential for hives and soreness.

Try washing the watch? May or may not help but at least you gave it a shot

Without providing specific medical advice, you should probably see a dermatologist.

There is a distinction between allergic contact dermatitis (typical skin allergy) and contact urticaria, they are not the same thing. Contact urticaria can be immunologic or non-immunologic. I can’t tell what you have from the photos, and can’t confirm if it’s ACd or contact urticaria from the photos either. Titanium allergy is not common, but also not easy to detect either by MELISA or patch testing. There could be other metal components, or there could be something in the rubber bracelet as well, or it could be unrelated to the watch entirely.

Bottom line: avoid the watch if it’s irritating and see a dermatologist.

dear OP, I had 2 Ti watches before and both I sold. One was far more irritating GS snowflake (skin-wise) than the other (2nd gen Omega x-33).

You could be the 1st person to put your Offshore on a bund strap.

To echo others, first you should see a doctor/dermatologist.

Second, since I'm not a doctor but still want to chime in... To me, it seems odd that it would present there (inner wrist) for a Ti allergy, I would expect it to start on the top of your wrist, where there is far more exposure to the Ti case. I would suspect you may have a reaction to the band, not the Ti.

My current full Ti watch is a Panerai 89 & my AP is a 44 ceramic; both have Ti casebacks & buckles. I have never had issues with the AP or the PAM on their own, however, I have had similar issues with the PAM when I put it on an alcantara strap. Typically, within a few hours I was itching, then it would rapidly transform into a significant rash that would take days to overcome. Anything placed back on my wrist would anger it until fully healed.

I know you said it occurred with a leather strap as well, but if you didn't have enough "healing time", it's possible that it may have just agitated it more. Of course, you could have an unfortunate allergy to the Ti alloy, but it is relatively uncommon.

You have my sympathy. I've tried it 3 times, twice with different alcantara straps & a repeat a few years later; all resulting with the same miserable, horrible itching & rash almost immediately. I hope it works out that it isn't the Ti causing the problem.

I have a similar issue with any sort of metal jewelry (gold, SS and titanium). It comes and goes seemingly at random.
