NOS Tudor Hydronaut II needs service?
(note: I posted this in the tech section, but thought I might get more eyes on it here)
Hi folks, A few months ago I acquired a NOS Tudor Hydronaut II from about 2010. The watch is in mint condition and runs great: +1 spd on wrist, +/- 2 spd positional variation, .1 msec avg beat error, amplitudes of 270 - 290; a very solid ETA movement with Tudor refinement. The watch is not worn every day as it is in rotation with six watches; so, once every few weeks for a week. My question is whether I should get it serviced, it being 10 years old although NOS, or should I just leave it as is. (Of course, if I have it serviced, I run the risk of it coming back worse than when it went in.) This was a grey purchase, so no warranty to cover a service. What do you folks think? Thanks much, Fred |

From what I remember reading from a Hodinkee article, the lubricants used in current watches have a shelf life, so regardless if worn or not they will have to be replaced as they inevitably degrade. I'd send it in considering the watch is 10 years old.

If it's running that well, I'd leave it be.
Warranty wouldn't cover a service, by the way, even if you had a valid one.

If you know the history and it is running well I would not spend the money on service. Enjoy the watch.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards leaving well enough alone and taking my chances. If performance degrades (it's an ETA, not a 32xx movement ), I'll get it serviced; if it breaks, it breaks.

I have an Hydronaut II bought new at Wempe in Paris by my dad in 2008. He never liked/wore the watch, so he gave to me 2 years ago, and the watch was running absolutely fine. I think my situation was similar to a NOS Watch, I think if the watch is running good, there is no need for service it...
