I'd get the most $$$ watch currently available or in the collectors market. Sell it off, buy one watch and pocket the rest of the cash. Being that's not realistic....I've been a 1 watch guy for a while and its always been a diver. Sub, DSSD, and now what I think is the one/ finally done (for me) the SD43.

Fun question OP.

The GMT Master2 LN, either the 116710 or 16710 depending on your preference.
All black and goes with everything.
Classic.
Priced within your budget.
Very similar to submariner, but a more interesting complication and super useful for travel.

Honestly, I think the Explorer 1 214270 Mk2 is the perfect one-watch collection. In fact, I just traded mine away and am kicking myself. In the market for another as we speak.

The watch is sporty/tooly enough to dress down and simple/elegant enough (the bezel is amazing!) To wear with anything short of a tux. 39mm perfect size for my big-ish 7.5” wrist (I usually wear 41-44) and the most comfortable tapered oyster bracelet. This is the watch for someone who doesn’t need strangers to know s/he is wearing a Rolex.

If I were a one watch guy

It would have to be the DateJust 16014 for me! Just a perfect all around watch for me!

A 2006ish 16613. Goes with everything, classic proportions, and at $10K, you’ve got money left to buy a nice suit and shoes.

A year of working from home led me to just wear my sub on rubber strap for comfort no keyboard scratching

If it’s got to be just one, then has to be my trusted SS black Sub date. So far have worn with everything. Suits, jeans and tee, formals, shorts etc. infact that’s the reason I bought the black sub in the first place. As don’t know when will the next one come and so wanted a versatile watch and what better than a sub!

Honestly I'd go Datejust 36mm, oyster bracelet, smooth bezel. Pocket the difference.
I’d do exactly the same. I might be swayed to a old school Sub Date but definitely one of those two.

Yea, I just can't imagine my only watch not having a date, that would eventually drive me mad.

I had a 16610 as a daily for many years and it was great, but the difference in comfort between that and a DJ was noticeable. Maybe it's just my wimpy wrists.

Watch has to be able to go with anything, casual and suits. Outfits would be black or blue so gotta go with both.

Yeah the comfort aspect is a big point, the 36 size certainly wins there. Think I’d go for a jubilee on the DJ as well - got a hankering for a modern jubilee in the collection. Now just to pick between black and blue.

If you were a one watch guy

The age old question...

Rolex GMT Master II, reference 16710. Probably black bezel, for versatility (black goes with anything). If possible, also procure the “Coke” (red/black) and Pepsi (blue/black) bezels.

Classic. Timeless. Practical.
