Icon14 Power Reserve/ Main Spring test completed. Why you should check yours.

If you are a automatic watch enthusiast like myself, these test are not only mandatory but interesting and fun. . .I love knowing what my watches movements are capable of. . These test are also a very good idea to keep a record of your automatics performance for future reference. .If your time starts to slip or power reserve starts to fall, you know its time for a service. .

On with the test.........
I just finished a main spring / power reserve test of my new Panerai "N" Pam 104. . . I started the the test Sunday morning at 9am by winding the watch fully and setting the time. . I then set the watch in my watch box making sure not to touch or move it for the duration of the test. .I then periodically monitored its accuracy as the mainspring winds down . . . The power reserve spec for the OPIII movement is 42 hours.
.. My results were surprising. .The watch has be regulate to a incredibly high standard. . .The OPIII movement in my watch keeps a outstanding accuracy rate of 0 seconds + or - in over 34 hours. .The next 4 hours the watch gained 1 second. In the next 8 hours, the watch gained +2.0 seconds with a total of +3.0 seconds at 46 hours into the test. . The next hour the watch gained +1.0 seconds. For a total of +4.0 seconds at the 48 hour mark. . At the 49 hour mark the Pam 104 was still at +4 seconds and at the 50 hour mark was +5 seconds. .This is amazing on many levels. .First its still way within COSC standard at the end of the mainspring's power. . Remember COSC measures its accuracy rate every 24 hours by fully winding the movement. . Accuracy is always best obtained at the top 1/2 of the mainspring's wind. . My Pam maintained a 0 second accuracy rate for the first 34 hours. . That is extremely rare and will out perform most quartz movements.. The next surprising factor is that the OPIII's power reserve is way past factory specs of 42 hours.

The test continues......
At 12:22pm the watch showed signs of slowing down and was recorded as +4 seconds. It gradually slowed down to – 1.50 seconds at 1:06pm. This is still with in COSC standards. The Pam 104 stopped at 1:07pm. That gives my Panerai Pam 104 a Power Reserve of 52 hours and 5 minutes!
That is way beyond the spec of 42 hours. The accuracy rate has been recorded on a earlier test as +.25 seconds in 4 days. The accuracy still would have passed COSC standards for the entire 52.5 hours of the main spring test.

I dont care what movement you have, those results from my experience is cutting edge accuracy for a automatic.
So in conclusion Panerai managed to put out incredible performance with the OPIII movement.
I would be very curious how Panerai's newer movements perform.
