Here is before picture. The dial had been redone and was damaged. He sent it to London where it was refinished. Not cheap or quick (took 3 months), btw, but the work is impeccable. The case, bezel and band were all in good shape, just needed some polishing. Purists may object, but to me the watch looks great, as promised by Rik.

And a picture from Rik's work bench. We've had the watch in the family since it was purchased new in Miami in 1965. The band was replaced by Mayor's in 1976 and at the time I tossed out the stretched out rivet band.
I cannot explain what happened to the dial but it was redone by a watchmaker in Miami around 1970 who apparently really messed it up. The dial was falling apart when Rik opened the watch and it had been touched up / repainted in a very sloppy fashion. A good gilt dial is almost impossible to find, and therefore Rik recommended refinishing the original dial to it's original specs. In his words, we can have a $500 refinish job done in the US that will be 75% right, or have it done in London for $2,000 and it will be impeccable. The watch looks like New Old Stock, and I respect that some may not like it. But it's all original parts, 1,190,xxx serial number, in its original case and bezel. My grandfather's brother took it off his wrist and gave it to me when I was in middle school around 1970. So it means a lot to me and my purpose was to return it, best I could, to it's original glory. Rik did an amazing job. Highly recommended. |

So, who did the dial work in London?

Love the story around the watch and it is absolutely beautiful. I would have done the same thing.
