First Patek - 5167 now or wait for 5712?

I have the Patek itch and it needs to be scratched badly.

If I were to own one and only one Patek, I have concluded that it would be the 5712. I love the asymmetrical dial, movement and complications on that model. However, I am unable to find an AD in Canada that is even willing to put my name on the waitlist, and at the moment, it is somewhat of out of my budget after two new pieces in the last 2 months.

At first, I was not a huge fan of the 5167. It has slowly grown on me, and I've always considered adding one to the stable - but much to my dismay, it seems 5167 prices are also creeping upwards likely due to the tulip mania around the 5711.

I've been offered a 5167 at an attractive price and I'm super tempted. I'm thinking of adding the 5167 now, which will hold me over until I can get a 5712 (at which point I can decide to flip the 5167 for the 5712, or something else in my collection.) Is this wise, or should I just wait for the 5712?

You should wait patiently for the 5712/1A while enjoying the two new pieces you acquired recently. Don't buy the 5167A if you don't plan to keep it.

if it was me i would get the 5167 now. That is of course if you will be in a position to get the 5712 whenever you happen to get the call.

You can always flip the 5167 later. Personally though i think that is pretty much the perfect Patek 2 sports watch collection. I have the 5164 instead of the 5167 but i like both.

5167 at a good price? Yes, get it first to hold you over.

I have 5167R and 5712, wait for 5712, or get the 5167 if you can add 5712 soon

I'd get the 67 as a placeholder and it's an easy flip for the 12 when it comes in.

The assuring thing about the 5167 is the low probability I'll get taken to the cleaners on it when/if I need to sell.

Typically in the past, when I've "settled" for another watch as opposed to the watch I really want (e.g. I bought a 26320ST in place of a 15202), I fall out of love with it pretty quickly. I don't feel that I'm "settling" with a 5167 - as it is very much a watch that I like on its own merits, just that if I were to pick one Patek, it would be the 5712. I see the 5167 as a good segue to the 5712, and I can easily see both co-existing in my collection. I just wonder if going for the 5167 now might remove some of that "wow" factor I'll get when I get a 5712 - as this will be my first jump into the Patek world.

Normally not a fan of placeholders but the 5167 is superb and who knows how long you'll be waiting for the 5712 if you're intent is to buy from a Canadian AD. Go for it.

Good things come to he who waits. (Plus, I can't abide the Aquanaut!).

I'd do it. As others have said, it's a relatively easy flip. Who knows, you might end up liking the 5167 better

I had the opportunity to try both in person. I went with the 5712- but I still wonder about getting a 5167 as a daily wearer.

Do it! They're both fantastic pieces. You may have even keep both

No I don't think you need worry, the 5712 will be enough to wow you I'm sure as it's a fine and more detailed piece, front and back. 67 is the perfect segue in.

I agree with this.

Why do you even need a 'filler piece' when you already have quite a few pieces (I've seen you post a few APs) along with two new ones in just the last couple of months? Unless you have a ton of zeroes in your bank account, two new (high end) watch purchases should be somewhat of a celebration........not a time to immediately feel the need to purchase something else. Doesn't really seem like the new purchases are even making you happy if that's the case...

Only my 2c

I thought my 67 would be a filler, but I come to appreciate the stealth of it. If it's a hot summer day it's the 67, but the 11 is worn for the majority of the time.

5167 at attractive price and actually available? Is this new from an AD or preowned? If you have a chance to buy I'd buy it. It's a no brainer. When 5712 comes around you will have a great choice to buy that one and flip or keep both. You will likely want to keep it so get it.

I'd echo the point that with 2 new pieces, you should really enjoy those first.

I'm not a big fan of the aquanaut, it has to be said and you have to be careful as I have seen some decent reps from Ebay, being as it's such a simple watch and the rep factories seem to have done a pretty good job

Thanks for the input all. Such a group of enablers.

I'm likely going to pull the trigger on the 5167. I actually foresee myself keeping this one in the collection even when I get a 5712.

get the 67R instead.
like Arnaud's, i think it would mate well (and not overlap as much) with the 12.

I wish! The 5167R is killer, but unfortunately, not in the cards at the moment (one of the reasons the 5712 will come at a later date is my budget). There'll be plenty of opportunity to switch down the line.

congrats. I think you will find an aquanaut and a 5712 pair quite nicely together. I bet you will end up keeping both. Good luck on the 5712 hunt as well.

First Patek - 5167 now or wait for 5712?

Had similar problem up on an other thread. Went for the 5164 as it arrived earlier and fit my existing collection better. Very good for everyday use. So far the 5164 has been very loved, enjoyable and more than satisfying. We'll see if i'll get the 5712 too once it arrives.

Oh and congrats!

No you'll still get the wow factor if 12 comes second, don't worry
