Oh padi….

I got this today, PADI has probably been a member longer then I have and will make me eat my gloating, but I think it’s kind of cool I can’t believe I have been a certified scuba instructor for 40 years. I started teaching actually in Mexico at age 17, and worked the summers on the Great Lakes searching for shipwrecks. I haven’t taught in years, keep saying I am getting back in to it, but I look back at some of my dives and jobs and think: “What the hell was I doing!?” But… when you are young, you are indestructible. I keep a couple cool finds displayed, the ink bottle is one of my favorites. I found it on the wreck of the A.B. Williams which sank in 1864 in 100 feet of water in Lake Huron, this is back in the 70s. I made my way in to the hold and think I found the Captain’s Cabin. Anyway, maybe I will get back in to diving maybe not, but there are a lot of great memories and experiences, and being involved with an organization for 40 years is kind of cool. Here is a link to a video of a dive on the A.B. Williams.

Impressive; an aviator and a diver. You excel in two of the most unforgiving environments known. Well done, sir!

I’ve been a divemaster for 25 years, but haven’t done much diving the last few. It’s a wonderful sport. Have you ever dove in Chuuk, Micronesia? (Used to be called Truk.) We dove Japanese World War II ships and aircraft wrecks for two weeks there. I sat in the cockpit of a Zero fighter plane in the hold of a transport ship, one of the highlights of my dive career.

That's quite the feat, Paul! Congrats.

The only thing I got from SCUBA diving was loss of half the hearing in my left ear. But as far as diving mishaps go I'm pretty lucky.

I got my PADI certification in Saudi Arabia in 1980 while working for Lockheed International C-130 contract.
