What’s the “Daytona spend threshold” at your AD

Does anyone who has been offered a Daytona (or other in demand piece) care to share the amount they spend annually at their AD to get them to that level? I’ll start: I’m in a mid-market city and my spend has been approximately $22k in 2019 and $20k in 2020 and my AD says I’m just not there yet, but I’m close. It has been a mixture of Rolex and diamond, gold and silver jewelry purchases. That level of spend will get me a Cermit though as I am told it is en route.

Worth noting that I have switched AD’s twice, due to a move and other factors.

Curious what you guys are hearing from your AD’s.

Thanks and please be well.

Speaking for myself would never spend extra for any watch or product to get any perceived so called today hot Rolex watches .And if everyone done the same then perhaps we could get back to the days before this hot watch thing syndrome, and Rolex watches becoming little more than hype £££££$$$$ things.

I would say if you shop at a dealer with a threshold, better to buy grey it will be cheaper in the long run.

Guess this means $100k+ in larger, more expensive cities. That’s kind of depressing when you think about it.

Agreed. Not to mention the wait time which could be YEARS!

I don’t believe my AD has one. I got mine with a much smaller spending history than most people (40ish). I think it had more to do with the fact that I regularly kept in touch with my SA. They knew I was interested in the watch. I had turned down several other hard to acquire SS watches.

It’s such a contentious subject.

Personally I just focus on buying what I like from the AD I trust. I’m genuine and I intend to communicate that to them.

So far that’s worked for me.

I’ve purchased some PM pieces and that potentially helps but not as much as you think.

Simple matter of fact is, they only get a very small number a year and they have many multiple clients that buy pm pieces and jewellery.

Yes it’s in the spend, yes there may be a manager set floor, but unless you are in a good place with your AD you will struggle.

Just don’t buy what you don’t want and either be patient or buy grey. If you are going to drop loads of money on stuff you don’t want you may as well buy grey.

Ps if you are in a big city and the AD stocks patek, I know my local patek AD has guys who spend millions with them across account. They trade the 250k constellation watches, I viewed one and it was going out the door that week, you can’t compete with that. Unless of course you are billionaire.

Hi Danny, I agree, there is some sound logic to this statement.

True story. Regardless of where you are, there is always someone who will spend more. This is especially true in your fine city.

Short of a VERY small amount of random luck deals...FAR, FAR more than the approximately 11-13k to get one extra from a grey. If you want one, just pay the grey...

Great advice and well said. I moved from an AD who carried Patek to a smaller one that only carries Rolex, Brietling, Cartier and Tag.

I would say I was an outlier with my AD. In 2018, I bought a Yacht-Master and a Sub a week later. Then eight months later got the Daytona. Bottom line, it depends on the AD, the market, luck, and demand.

I don’t like being taken for a fool by any AD and shop elsewhere.

For a Daytona I would get a PM, much nicer case dimensions and no need for all this AD drama.

The former GM at my AD told me house policy was: no S/S Daytona unless 100k have been spent. His successor said there was no threshold at all but allocation depended on the mix of, well, not insignificant purchases - watches and jewelry.

(Full disclosure: Neither have I been offered an S/S Daytona nor do I much care anymore.)

Cheers

200K + to be considered worth for a SS sport model, in the likes of Daytona, GMT.
Buying jewelry helps more than watches as it has higher margin.

If during your purchase history you bought other professional models, your wait might take longer even if you've reached the 200k mark.

that is brutal, to spend that much year after year and have the dealer flat out be like yeah umm nope.

While I don't have a Daytona, with my GMT I was lucky to have been a regular customer over the years and the store manager was a great guy, he said I was on the "list" and then called me a year later....sadly he has moved to another dealer but thankfully they still carry Rolex.

another family member said he works with a dealer whom he speaks with that has told him he has folks that have spent a ton over the years and are still waiting.

If I wanted one that bad I'd just go grey as what you'd have to spend and the wait seems not worth it.

I bought a BLNR in 2017 for $8950, a BLRO in 2018 for $9250, then a Daytona for $12400 in 2019.

The chances of your AD already having a Daytona in the safe is very likely. He sees you are dropping 20k each year and you lose the bargaining power bringing the Daytona into picture after the spending. He has no incentive to sell the watch to you anymore because he knows you will spend another 20k to get the watch. Or he can sell the watch to any other person who says they will buy a DD if the SA bundles it with Daytona. Before going to grey or buying anything else from this SA, I suggest spending $20 on this book, “Never Split the Difference: Negotiating As If Your Life Depended On It“ which may save you thousands.

I don't get it. Really I don't. I love Rolex more than any other brand of well... anything, and I've been fortunate enough to own 3 of them. But this whole SS sport model price thing has become completely out of hand, at least for me.

I guess it's all about what you are willing to pay, but IMHO, we are way past the cost/want quotient.

I buy "almost all" my <various brand> watches from AD's, at MSRP, and I also have ZERO interest in the Daytona or, as it just so happens, ANY of the other hyped-up currently-in-demand 'hot' Rolex items.

My tastes <and dollars> go to other models and types.

It is sad that so much of this today is literally nothing more than people chasing $$$.
