I was at the AJ fight last night with my dad and thought I’d do comparison shot between my SD43 and his platona, the weight of the Daytona still surprises me every time.

Surprised no one has mentioned these Basel 2018 novelties (pics not mine). I'm a big fan of Hindi numerals and while Rolex did it well on the DD40, I'm not sure it flows well on the platona, it makes for a busy dial. I also dislike that the hour numerals are Hindi while the numerals on the subdials and bezel are Arabic, it would have been a home run if the numerals were all Hindi.
Can't aurgue that it's definitely unique though. FYI it's the same reference number as the regular platona but sold only in the Middle East. |

Recently acquired... found it difficult to capture the gorgeous ice blue dial, except under the sun...

Has anyone changed the bezel to black ceramic? I’ve got the all blue dial and really prefer black as brown is a least favorite color

In the throws of trading in my collection. Seriously considering the Platona as a choice; anyone have any regrets? How many owners are there on the forum, btw?
Well, dress convention from my youth in Manhattan recommended black shoes with blue suit and brown shoes with gray. Maybe old fashioned now. I was always ab bit of a rebel and never followed the rules until I grew up!!! |

Thank you Steve, I really trust your opinion and I am steadily heading in that direction. The bumps on the way are: 1- I am on the list for the wg Daytona on oysterflex with grey/black dial. So I am not sure which one I like more 2- I am contemplating the 5170p as an alternative which is also a fantastic watch 3- not sure which one I like more, the normal one or the one with diamond hour markers |

Official platinum daytona owners club (or wanta be) thread!!!

All great options! I originally owned the Platona and sold it to fund my 5170p. I rationalized a platinum chrono out to make room for another platinum chrono. However, I realized very quickly that I really missed a full platinum Rolex, so I scratched that itch by making room to add the platinum DD40. But, it wasn’t long until I realized that I didn’t just miss the full platinum Rolex, but instead the Platona. And now the two platinum chronos coexist, and they do so perfectly. They can be worn similarly (dressed up in a suit) or for very different occasions (Platona is often worn with shorts and a tee shirt with flip flops). I’m not sure what else is in your collection but if it’s possible (I moved pieces to make it happen), having these two together is a great combination. As for which Platona dial, personal preference. I think the baguette dial is stunning. But, if you think you’ll ever end up with a 5170p, then the non-diamond Platona works great and save the diamond baguette markers for the 5170p. A non-diamond Platona affords it a little more flexibility in “dressing down” IMHO. Good luck!

Thank you Steve. Just to avoid deviating from the purpose of this thread, I will be shortly creating a separate thread to discuss my choices and collection in more details. But in short, as much as I love to, I can't have both watches in my collection in the near future. So for the time being I have to assume that if I am fortunate enough, it will only be one of them for the foreseeable future. |

Thanks, Tom!!! Definitely a big incoming and really thrilled with the watch.
Thanks so much, very happy with the model!!! FWIW, I think the brown surrounds in the sub dials really tie in the brown bezel on the Super-Luminova baguettes model. The diamond dial is beautiful but I really like the tie in the SL baguette dial offers!!! I also like working lume a lot!!!! |
