Sounds hard to get, you and 9000 other people will vote to see who gets the watch. At the end only 1 will get the watch all others loses their dollar. How can you be sure you can win the most votes.

Once these 9000 people bring in their friends and family to vote, and each vote is $1. The total amount of money collected by the site may be multiple of the watch's cost, and after paying out for the watch, the site probably get to keep alot of money.

Yeah man get what your saying and agree. But i think it's not that different from lottery you pay a price for a ticket and hope to win. But diffrence here you have a little bit of agency because of your pitch (for which users vote).
I don't think i understand second part of your message. If you say that 9000 participants bring more people to vote that's really is moneymaking machine for them and it might cost you a pretty penny in the long run. But if i understand correctly you can ask friends and family to voye only if there is a tie. At least it what i get fron their how it works page.
