Is 5000 GBP a good price for no box/no papers Y serial GMT Master 2?

Thank you in advance.

Looking online at places close to me, it seems a good deal.
Nice piece too. If you like it, and are happy with the price then pull the trigger. I would.

It’s not too bad at all, and looks ok to my relatively untrained eye. If you like it, I’d go for it.

Sounds like a reasonable price.
Is it from a reputable seller?
Can you get it verified by an AD?
Do they know anything of its history or servicing record?

That’s been messed with

They had one like that in the Trafford centre (manc) and it wasn’t shifting.

In this age 5k is cheap for a gmt - I’d rather pay more for a watch that hasn’t been modified

The previous owner has either bought a spare or removed the insert and bleached the insert. You would not get a salmon insert fade on a watch from 2001.

I always buy wisely from a trusted seller which maybe someone on here, on TRF or a dealer.

As then you know they have done their du diligence and bought a watch that’s unpolished / well cared for and not messed with.

I would disagree with that. I got a 2000 coke gmt that has a nice fade.. Its actually not that uncommon.

but I do agree with getting it certified from a local Rolex dealer. My general rule of thumb for buying used watches is to count that in the price.

That Pepsi looks almost as faded as mine but to my knowledge several of the early 2000 era Pepsi’s had Salmon faded bezels I had read on here. And I purchased it w B&P’s from an AD selling pre owned as well. Personally I like full set watches, but if it’s all legit and is a good deal plus if you like it go for it.

I had a new 1999 GMT worn daily for 10years. The bezel faded just like this. Quite frankly the bezel is nothing special for these watches, not fat font etc, and can be changed easily.

My 2007 GMT 16710 has a faded bezel too, so a Y (2003) would fade too.

It depends on how much it was exposed to the sun.

Do you honestly think seventeen years of sun exposure won't fade an insert? Seventeen years. Really?

I have a 16710 Pepsi from the same era and the insert is similar to the photo posted...

I can’t disagree can I. Multiple people own this watch from the same era and claim it has faded the same way. So it must do.

To me it looked chemically altered. And to the person who asked if I don’t think sunlight would fade a alu bezel in 17 years. Of course it would but to the extent of red to salmon pink, clearly, no I didn’t think it would bleach it to the extent posted.

Yes, a very good price. If you're not going to buy I would appreciate the sellers details, thank you.

Well, I just sold an insert that was about 15 years old, 100% naturally faded to a blue and salmon color and it was never chemically altered in any way.

I'm just trying to understand why you only think it had to be bleached with no room for an alternative. You're welcome to disagree but your basis for disagreement doesn't seem based on experience. That's why so many are pushing back on your comments.

You can still see a fair amount of shine to the insert in photos 2 and 3. Bleach would have knocked the shine out of it unless it's one of a few inserts that naturally lose their shine. It's easy to spot genuine from faked if you've seen enough of them. This one looks correct.

5K is low for a Y serial GMT-II. I've got an all black Y-serial GMT-II from 2003 that's never been serviced. The watch looks good, but I would have a competent watchmaker remove the back and check the movement before buying it.

I think I may know this seller from the picture, if I am right he is known for putting prices together to make watches. Usually military.

PM me if you want

do you mean pieces ?

I have a GMT II circa 2005 and, owner used to leave in Florida, got plenty of sun and faded nicely to a salmon color however it would depend where you leave. some have kept their GMT in a safe for 10 years.

as other have mentioned, I wouldn't stop because of an insert, even if it was fake. If you are not being it to collect it and are not bothered by the vintage inserts, I would move on, you can get a brand new insert from the AD from ~$70 and if you cannot get an AD, you can find some on this website, all 3 colors.
Furthermore to what others have said, the movement, dial, hand, shape of the lugs is what I would bet on. can you give us a close up of the dial and the clasp?

Looks to be a good deal at £5k, these are commanding much more, almost too good to be true... so, as there is no box and papers, you must have it checked out for theft. To do this you need to take it to a dealer.
