Regard about travel watch

Hi, I posted a thread two days ago and most of you choose 5164a because it is good for travel. Today, I see that a patek of someone's sister has been stolen in spain. This makes me consider about this problem. Will you travel with a patek? Even we think that the stain steel patek is not stunning. The professional robber will recognize easily since they know the watches well.

Depends on where you’re traveling to. Milwaukee? Sure.

I did travel with 5164 to South America (Ecuador, Argentina, Brazil and Chile) in early summer (business) and plan to do it again in about a week time? Am I concerned? Yes but just a bit. It is about being street smart and having luck.

As the previous post stated "Live is too short for not travelling with a Patek!"

Regard about travel watch

I will, but with insurance. By the way Barcelona is not worse than any big European country when it comes to that sort of thing. Thankfully Patek theft is less common than Rolex - in part because second hand Patek buyers generally want the original papers when they buy the watch.

depends on your means of going out and about, Barcelona is a crowded city..if you're walking around a lot by foot, or taking public transport, then it wouldn't be too smart to wear your Patek. if you are staying in good hotels, going around by taxi, not getting drunk and walking late at night around the city, then you should be fine.

So long as you have it insured, I don't see the problem here.

In Barcelona the average time for a thief to remove a watch is 3.5 seconds.

In 2018 this answer is changing...

I used to travel anywhere with an Aquanaut and almost anywhere with a Nautilus. For years I never got a comment or 2nd look on either. But Patek is becoming more main stream for better or worse so I think its worth reconsidering them for travel. I'd still do a 5164 but maybe a RG 5711 no.

just received new travel watch, LE Oris Diver, depending on location it will be between this or my Rolex Explorer II. i have had a couple of incidents that made me uncomfortable with the explorer over the last few years.

i don't expect the Oris to attract any attention at all.
note: the Oris is close in cost to the price i paid for the rolex.

i typically keep my phone on home time while watch is on travel time.

i would wear it anywhere and everywhere i would go. Why even go to wherever it is, if you are afraid. You will still have a wallet if you leave your watch, right?

Patek goes way more under the radar than a Rolex so its a better option IMO anyway

I have some concern that the idea of “under the radar” has changed as a result of the internet, perhaps the 5524 will not be as prominent a target as the Nautilus line or the average Rolex though I wouldn’t rule it out.

It seems Barcelona has become much like Naples as far as the likelihood of being targeted. Regarding a wallet, it is also a concern and in need of protecting and considerate about what it contains and where it is kept. In either of these cities it is a strong possibility someone have a bag or phone stolen in minutes if left on a table accessible to passers by.

As far as traveling to these places, I don’t think they are violent and unsafe if you have nothing worth taking... the idea is to blend in with the surroundings and not stand out as a target.

To date I have traveled everywhere I have gone with a Rolex on, either submariner or explorer, but after decades of doing so, I see a difference.

Off topic, I also did a lot of travel via motorcycle over 20 years and that has also changed as a result of the number of people looking at their phone rather than the road... many of my favorite restaurants have closed down... things change.

If I’m not going to wear my watches - I’d rather not have them.

Just have to be aware at all times.

Luxury watches are hyped and high profile now and any robber worth his salt will know all the models to steal now so I don't really distinguish brands on that basis anymore, get them insured and then have your wits about you and if in doubt where a Casio etc.

Always take precautions to any European / piss-poor country. Know your surroundings. Know when you can wear a watch and if in doubt, pull down your sleeves and take cabs.
If you need to look at google maps, go into a shop and check your phone. Stay away from crowded places, but stay in open places and not walk down alleys. All the stuff your mum taught you when you were a kid.

its quite the overgeneralization and you are equating poverty to crime. Like if its a poor country then you will get robbed. Ive been to plenty of countries with shocking levels of poverty but the people are not waiting to rob me. Being poor doesn't make you a criminal, being a criminal makes you a criminal.

Try flash your watch in Lewisham. Let me know how that goes. People are hungry nowadays.

Putting yourself at risk is unnecessary when carrying a watch worth someone's annual wage (or more) in areas / countries where poverty is rife. That's inviting the opportunist to make a move on you.

There are also a lot of moped snatches in London for phones and watches. I tend to wear a 5960 to deter potential robbers....

I brought my 5164 to LA on a part of town that is not considered totally safe. But I make sure that my watch is not exposed and that I don’t bring it out in the open at night.
