PAM233 if your budget covers one. As a first/or only Panerai it has so much on its side.

Stunning domed sapphire crystal.
8 day manual wind.
Sandwich dial.
In house movement.
Useful complications - jump hour, GMT, date, seconds, quick set seconds and AM/PM indicator.
Quick change strap mechanism.
Sweet spot for size (for all).
1950 contoured case with mix of brushed and polished.
Crystal case back.
Trademarked trademark crown guard.
Panerai DNA updated for 21st century.

Is that enough?

PS personally I find the case of the Bettorini Luminor (ie non-1950) underwhelming, plus the flat crystals are... well, flat. The movements in the non-1950 Luminors (even the 8 day) are quite simple and don't even have the jump hour, and most have screw lugs, which whilst historic is in my mind less appealing than the quick change ones.

Hope this opinion is of some help. Just search on the PAM233 and enjoy the pics.

Take your time and enjoy the ride. Many things to check out, learn about and try on. :-)

If 44 Luminors float your boat, off the top of my head, I’d look at 000, 005, 111, 176, 177, 233, 510, 562, 564 and 911 for manuals and 24, 104, 164, 312, 359, 1312 or 1359 for automatics.

Did u just wake up today and decide u want a Pam ?

Ur question is like asking people to pick out ur mail-order bride....

Go to the Panerai store and start looking and trying it on different watches, different sizes.

If u find a model u like and want to actually buy, than u can do the research and the due-diligence

If you want a date, that leaves you with the 233 and the automatics. Good luck with the hunt!

Panerai has produced more than 400 different models and variations since they have been back on the scene since the late 90'-2000's. So you should be able to find a watch you like. Problem is that the market rises and falls like the tide and a model that is hot today will not be very soon and the price will fall. I would skip Panerai, and I am a fan and owner, at the moment and find a more classic choice that you will not get crushed in. I would look at a five digit Explorer II. I like the Polar but the black dial works well and it has a date and a good resale value. Part of the hidden cost of Panerai is the straps and you will want more than one. Educate yourself and look at a third or fourth watch maybe being a Panerai. Never buy retail, even with a good discount, most of the watches are worth 30-50% off retail once pre-owned. Good luck, you are going to need it.

Whilst 1william makes some valid points, if you want an investment stick it in a pension, if you want to enjoy a hobby that has modest costs associated with it then despite having been a lifelong Rolex fan, I've become a Panerai convert in the past 2 years. Love the strap aspect of the hobby and there are so many different models, and the people (on Forums, in the flesh and those who work on the boutique) are super.
