There are other and less expensive methods than using a metal detector. Just use your brain and think it out.

I have done fresh water, low-vis searches. A technique that i have used is to push a 6-8 foot length of PVC pipe along in front of you as you traverse the bottom (always in a grid search or circular search as previously described).

Any metallic or hard objects will make a very unique sound when it contacts the PVC. This will work even if there is silt on the bottom. PVC is very cheap and easy to buy/carry.

Dont give up.

Good luck!

Another great idea. Hopefully one of the ideas will work!

Good luck with the new search, feeling positive, I am 100% sure a 7 hour oxygen reserve will give good results. Awaiting the pictures of the sub...

Another failed attempt with 2 divers in gear and me free diving. I was not able to locate a metal leak detector locally so that was not an option. I just ordered an underwater metal detector online but with it being Sunday the quickest i could get it here will be Tuesday. The sting is feeling less painful today knowing that i have done everthing i could have done to try to retrieve it. I also would have never guessed that I would have two divers working for only Crown royal, pizza, gyros, and tacos in a dirty river trying to help me out. It gave me a reallity check on the value of true friends. I hate to say it it but the odds of me finding it now are probably 1000 times worse than my number being called in a TRF Giveaway drawing. I will keep you guys posted but it will be quite a few days from now. Thanks again. Clark

It took Ballard and Co. a while to find the Titanic, too. Keep the faith. And now your divers have places they don't need to look.

I'm sorry to hear that things didn't go well today. I'm glad that you haven't given up yet. With a metal director, I'm sure you will find your watch. Again, good luck. Keep up updated.

How deep is it? If you can get a dropped metal detector, ie., one that you drop from the surface, you can lay out a grid and go back and forth in a boat (like mowing the lawn) with it hanging beneath. You don't need to worry about divers and air, (not oxygen, unless they're using rebreathers) and you can go back and forth indefinitely.
When you get a hit with the metal detector you drop it, and then send a diver down the line to get the watch.
Easy.

Clark, sorry about the failed attempts, but glad you're still with TRF. Lots of good folk here pulling for you. Even without a watch you are more than welcome to stay with TRF.

Even if it is never found, there will be another one someday. Don't let it get you down but look at it as an opportunity to get a new one, if not today then tomorrow.

Sad story. Only if someone finds it and the serial is in your name and it ends up finding it's way back to you. Just wishful thinking

Fingers crossed the metal detector you ordered makes the difference.

Northern Pike's post above interested me, if your next attempt isn't a success that's the route I'd be looking at.

How deep is the water gowzhog?

We had a dive team where I used to work. Most police and fire do, even small agencies. They might view this as a training exercise and strap on their tanks. I know they often dive for other small metal objects that we will not discuss here.

But you are going to find it Clark and soon.

Yes. They are always looking for training sites that are not same old boring routine. Talk to your local dive community and public safety (police) divers.
