A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Outsize Date

Was blown away by this watch...had an 1815 at one point and had no intention of looking at true 'dress watches' for a while but at the same time looking for something just a little dressier to add to the collection (something like a TT GMT II). But saw this and was immediately drawn to it and once on the wrist...just truly amazed again by ALS.

Feels less dressy than the traditional 1815 and just love the combo of the big date and the small seconds complications and how they are laid out on the dial in perfect symmetry. So now...pink gold or white gold???

Bonus pics of the Datograph Up/Down. Just a whole different level of watch of course.

A gold-off is always a tricky competition to judge.

Really to me it depends on factors we don't know about, such as do you have other jewellery that goes better with one or the other (e.g. a ring, glasses etc) or do your favourite clothing colour / styles or your skin tone give a better nice match to a warm pink gold colour or a sporty clean steel look.

If it were mine, I would go white gold. But that's for me. For you, who knows!

I do like the brown strap in the last photo as a pairing with the warmer gold.

Pure aesthetics I'd go for PG as the contrast against the black dial is always appealing.

Agree with you on this watch, I tried it on a few weeks back and it was definitely more appealing on the wrist than I'd expected based on press pictures etc. The black date discs are a real winner.

Agree, the black dates are nice. I'd probably go RG on this as it is pretty subtle most of the time anyway so more diversity.

Really close on pulling the trigger but still really torn between the two...the plan is to put it on a brown Lange croc strap and even get a less formal leather strap - still leather, but a less dressier one (something with a vintage inspired look perhaps) and maybe even in a lighter shade of brown.
Clearly both are dress watches and I’ve got others that fill the “sport/shorts and tee” attire but I want to be able to enjoy this and be able to wear it less formal/full suit settings. I think the WG ref can do that more easily...am I wrong? But that rose gold really does pop and on the flip side, the rose gold dresses up easier and feels more special. Help and opinions?

Based on what you're wanting and the straps you're describing, I'd go with the rose gold.

Yeah..going to go with RG 99.99%. I'm going to try this and the Saxonia moonphase in RG side by side. Initial gut feeling is that I stick to the original plan of picking up the outsize date...moonphase feels dressier and could be tougher to 'dress down'. Will keep everyone posted but if anyone was in the same boat, opinions solicited!!!

Couldn't find it on Lange's site...can anyone confirm lug to lug width? Quick research indicates that it's 19mm but would love to know if anyone can in fact confirm this or point me to ALS site that says so. Thanks.

A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Outsize Date

I’m facing the same choice WRT 1815 Chronograph. WG (black dial) or RG (white dial).

I’ve a chance to pick it up next week during my travels and the choice is one of the 3 above. The RG (black dial) is n/a at either AD or boutique.

Reading the responses above, most ppl favour RG. I recognise that RG is more dressy. But by changing the strap, can it be dressed down to pair with chinos/jeans?

Would go with rose gold. White is okay, but the warmth of rose takes the feeling to the next level.

I did get a chance to try on the moonphase in the WG variant. Lovely watch. Though at 40mm....I can really notice the difference between the 'space' in the dial vs that of the outsize date. The diff between 38.5 vs 40 on the wrist is negligible. That's a non issue - both feel great with one not being too small and one not being too large.

But the layout on the 40 feels almost like there's too much empty space on the dial. The outsize date dial feels more balanced with the smaller size. Thoughts?

Again, both beautiful...

Normally I'm a fan of moonphases but it kind of gets lost with the black dial here. If you were looking at the silver dial version, my vote would definitely be for the moonphase. Also, in your pics here, the 38.5mm version makes the watch look a little more balanced and I think it fits your wrist better.

If that’s what your eye/brain interaction leads you to conclude, then there's little point asking to be convinced otherwise.

Some would say the layout makes for a less cluttered look, and it may only be an adjustment period before you appreciate and get used to it, after which it’d be a non-issue.

I believe they actually made the 'blue' on the moonphase disc for the back dial purposefully a darker shade of blue to blend in more with the black dial.

ALS have the nicest shade of rose gold of all manufacturers in my view. Perfectly balanced colour tone.

Dark blue can look darker than black in low level lighting - so would make sense for them to have done just that.

So...going to check these out in the flesh. Apparently there is a little difference between the dials but I think the lighting exaggerates it. All the press pics and seeing them individually in the flesh doesn’t show much difference.Should be interesting!!!

The non-moonphase version looks better out of the two and seems to fit your wrist better.

Keen to see what you decide

Got to see and try these in side by side. Side by side on the tray the size diff is definitely noticeable. But on the wrist, both look great on my personal wrist size, they are very close. But my gut/heart has me leaning towards the outsize date. The moon phase definitely dresses this watch up more in my opinion and while both very versatile, I think the outsize date plays both sides of the fence better. And I also just liked the way the “smaller” watch wore notwithstanding what I mentioned above. The other piece is that I just don’t think I’m ready to appreciate the moonphase complication for the price jump...and I kind of like the sporty look of the full seconds track.

Sooooooo close. This will be my first (and only) RG piece. Shall I take the plunge???
