dust particle beneath crystal on a new 114060: what to do?
Hello,
long time reader, but this is my first post! Since 1 month I'm the proud owner of my first Rolex: a submariner 114060. I bought it brand new from a grey dealer in Holland (I live in Belgium myself). I was quite nervous when buying the watch, after reading about misaligned bezels and minute hands that don't line up, so I inspected the watch very carefully, and all was well. Bezel aligned, hour and minute hands line up, the lume is correctly applied, no scratches anywhere. The watch runs at a steady +2 seconds per day. I was very happy! However, two days later I wore the watch outside for the first time, in bright daylight, and I noticed what appeared to be a small scratch on the crystal. After some inspection I realized that the scratch was on the INSIDE of the crystal (since it's on a deeper level than the dust that lies on top of the crystal). Also I think it's probably a tiny dust particle, although I'm not 100% sure of that. I'm sure that the speck is there since the beginning, because I've got a picture the dealer sent to me, and it's visible there as well, together with other small specks on top of the glass. Anyway, I'm pretty bummed about this, I keep staring at the little speck, instead of enjoying the watch. The dust particle is visible by the naked eye when you're in daylight or bright light indoors, at 30cm or closer. I already tried shaking and gently tapping but it won't move. You can see the speck in the attached picture, it's 1cm to the north of the X from ROLEX. These are my options: 1) go to the nearest Rolex RSC (which would be here in Brussels) and ask them to fix it for me 2) sell the watch and cut my losses (the watch is 99.99% pristine), try buying a new one and hope it will be perfect 3) learn to live with it, and ask RSC to remove the dust when I have it serviced in 5 to 7 years I'm a bit scared of option 1, because it's a pity to open a brand new watch for a tiny dust particle. What if they make scratches on the lugs, case or dial while opening it up? What if MORE dust enters? Would RSC Brussels be capable of removing the dust, without making any extra scratch anywhere? Option 2 would cost me some money, and I'm not even sure if finding another one which is 100% perfect in every way (I'm cursed with great eyesight and extreme pickyness). Option 3 would be the healthiest I guess, just letting go of the idea that industrially produced objects can ever be 100% perfect? Wabi sabi and all that. Any advice is more than welcome! :) |

I would go to RSC because I won't be able to live with that.
I actually have a 114060 and the markers have some bubbles on them. I'll be visiting my AD very soon. |

Go to RSC. It's a quick fix.
No sense in selling it. If you don't get it resolved, it's all you will see when you look at your watch. |

Doesn't the scratches on the bezel bother you?

First there are not any real alignment points on Rolex watches the bezel is only to be aligned with the minute hand when timing anything. Now its not meant to be left permanently at the 12 position. Regarding that tiny bit of lint under the crystal it can easily be removed, I had to look hard even under the high magnification to see it but my old eyes are not as good as when a youngster. And afraid that spec was there when you bought the watch could not have got in by just wearing it.So either forget its there or get it removed under the warranty, now if you live near a RSC its possible they could do that simple job while you wait. But if sent back via a AD expect to be without your watch was 2-4 weeks. And no harm will come to your watch by unscrewing the case back its just like unscrewing a pot of jam and not rocket science.

This is exactly what I would do, get it taken care of, take some pics before you take it in and make sure that they pressure test it before it's returned. Good luck and please keep us posted. Sweet watch and BTW, welcome to TRF!

I'd send it in to RSC, especially if the dust particle is all you see when you look at the watch.
By the way, beautiful watch nonetheless |

Had a brand new LV. Made the mistake of looking at it under a loupe. There was a copper fiber or wire on the dial. Took it back to the AD. They saw it and hated it too and sent it off to the RSC for me. No charge and back perfect in 2 weeks.

Take the watch to the RSC and have it fixed. No big deal. Enjoy your watch, it is a great one.

I might take it to the RSC after all, since that's what most people imply, but I would be scared of it coming back without the dust, but with a few scratches on the lugs, dial, bracelet or case. I'm probably too paranoid :)

X2 Take it to RSC and fix it! You've got a really nice new watch and it should be up to normal Rolex-standard, i.e. flawless.

Get RSC to remove it. I had same thing with my DJ [first nice watch] which I bought new . The AD were pretty slimy and kept trying to tell me they couldn't see it, untill I photographed it and it was v clear. I thought it was dust but it turned out to be a scratch on the dial - it was, once I'd noticed it, very visible in bright sunlight. The changed the dial for me. Now its perfect and I love the watch just as much and never thought about it again. I'd get them to remove the dust or change the dial if it's a scratch. You're watch was extremely expensive and shouldn't have that kind of imperfection from new.

dust particle beneath crystal on a new 114060: what to do?
RSC immediately, should be fine, trust them. If possible take some pics of the caseback and lugs before you bring it in.
Best of luck! |

Bought a GMT 2c used but in great condition. Same thing, noticed dust on dial about 2 weeks after buying it. Took it back to AD, they opened it, cleaned it and had it back to me in 5 min. Now it's perfect. Also bought my datejust brand new from a different AD. On receiving it found it had a small red fiber on the dial at 9oclock. Took it back, again the AD opened it and solved the problem in 5 minutes. Don't regret doing either as it was all I could see every time I looked at these watches. Now I enjoy them more.

Easy solution guys, toss the loupes in the nearest trash can. I've been looking an an eye lash under the crystal of a vintage Hamilton for years. When it goes in for service I'll have it removed.

I had a dust particle on my YG GMT and I had RSC fix it twice... Yes, twice. The first time they removed the particle but another particle got in... The second time was the charm.

If it truly bothers you to the extreme (as it seems it does), let your RSC take care of it. Life's too short to be aggravated for 5-7 years until next service.

Had the exact same problem when I bought my GMT IIC.
After getting over the disbelief that it got by QC I took it back to the AD. They sent it to the RSC and it was resolved no big deal! Unfortunately these things happen but are very easily fixed. I got the watch back very quickly with apologies and haven't though about it since. |

the same on my brand new explorer i bought from ad at full retail, when outisde i can see white particles on the dial and i have a mark under the glass between 6-7 position.
i won't take it to RSC as i know they will make scratches on bracelet/ lugs. that was the last rolex i ever bought, quality control seems really poor as i see these threads pop out like mushrooms. |

But like you, I'm a bit afraid to go to RSC, seeing as there is a non-zero chance that they'll leave scratches behind. |
