Daytona falsities and myths

The Daytona. It took me a while to really get it.

Two tone?

Yes please. It’s gorgeous. Shorts or blazer.

Too small?

I’m 6’3 280. Nearly 8 inch wrist. It’s never occurred to me they are too small. I wonder how many never consider one because of what they’ve read?

I wear everything from 36 explorer to SD43 to Panerai 47 to AP 44’s. The Daytona is hardly small. It’s actually, perfect.

One thing a Daytona never is. Subtle. In any flavor.

We live in great times folks.

I agree, Daytona is the perfect size, and would love to add a two-tone to my black dial 116520.

I'm 6'4", 230lbs, and have never grokked this whole anything under 42mm looks feminine or too small, personally, just my opinion.

Love the look and fit of my Rolex Sub, Daytona, and 36 mm DD...no complaints.

If anything, just my opinion, I pulled out some of my watches from the 90's, just monstrous beasts, 45mm and above, and now, I find them ridiculous looking, but, that's my opinion, different strokes for different folks, but can't see a 40mm watch hitting anything other than an enduring "sweet spot".

Thanks for the look at that sweet Daytona 503....

Daytonas wear small. This is known fact.
The GMT and Daytona are 40mm and the Daytona wears nothing close to the GMT. This isn’t to mention they are trying to fit a chronograph into 40mm. That watch needs to be like 42mm at least.

What does that even mean, “wears small”. It’s math. It’s size is, what it is. It’s not magic or anything, it wears exactly what size it is.

I don’t walk around wearing an explorer 1 saying it wears small. I say it wears like an explorer 39 wears. Comfortable and perfect.

That “wears small” phrase is a unicorn.

Ridiculous statement ..... absolutely ridiculous.

If it’s so small and so bad why is it the most sought after watch on the planet ???

I’m 6’ - 1” with 8.25” wrists. I love the Daytona and my WG Daytona is now my one and only watch.

FYI... the SS & TT (plus yellow gold on strap) are actually 38.66mm and the other PM models are larger at 39.66mm.

I respectfully disagree with you. “Wears small” or the opposite of that, is common nomenclature in the watch world and we talk about it here all the time. Lots of things make a watch wear small or large relative to its published size like lug width/shape, fixed end links, case height etc etc.

As to whether the Daytona is right for you ... well that’s totally an individual choice and clearly your happy with it.

Where I do agree with you, is that you can’t rule out a watch purely on its advertised size. You have to try it on to see if it works.

Great looking watches and I have always been a Daytona fan. I can now say that I have owned them all in every metal as I just bought the Platinum Daytona. Wears small is a subjective statement and each of us must determine what we like and what feels comfortable. I have found that whatever I have been wearing is what feels good. When I wear one of my 47 mm Panerai's for a few days then that is the norm and is fine. When I wear a 40mm watch for a few days it becomes the norm and is good. I have also learned over the years that there is room in most collections for different types and sizes of watches. My last purchase has put me on the bench for a bit based on cost but when I get back to it, I am going to be looking at and possibly for a SS Daytona with the ceramic bezel. Possibly white dial but maybe black.

The stainless ceramic Daytona is 38.5mm. It "wears small" for a 40mm because it isn't 40mm.

If you're after a 42mm chronograph, just about every other manufacturer makes one. I for one am glad Rolex is still using a traditional size.

This is my point!

"Wears small" is silly. It wears its exact size. Now if the statement is it's smaller than advertised to be,ok. That makes sense. But it's not like you put on a Daytona, and then at some point in the day it shrinks and you're like " damn, it shrunk again".

It's size it what it's size is.

Now the 36 Explorer 1. I love mine. I have zero problem wearing it. Is it small? Yes, its small on me. And no Chrono pushers and what not to increase its presence.

COMFORT?.....The DJ41 on jubilee, the Daytona and the Explorer 1. Watches you literally forget you're wearing.

Outstanding. I will find the right deal on one ( Non baguette) at some point. That being said..I had one on for 24 hours or so before. The weight hanging down on your ulnar side of the wrist gets to be a bit much.

Wears small is only "silly" if you don't understand the context.

How a watch "wears" is subjective and not just related to its case diameter, be that quoted size or actual size.

I recently tried a Tudor BB58. A 39mm watch. On my wrist it appeared to be significantly smaller than, for example, a 39mm Explorer, notwithstanding the case diameters are the same.

Your impression may be different, of course.

I recently also tried on a WG Daytona with the diamond black MOP dial. It also appeared significantly smaller than its (almost 40mm being the larger WG case) actual size suggests.

I do appreciate that those thinking a SS or YG (on bracelet) Daytona is a 40mm watch may find it smaller because its not a true 40mm, however for many people (myself included) the RG, WG and PT Daytona's also appear smaller than their true size of almost 40mm would suggest.

Its no "myth" in that sense

I did have the opportunity to buy that watch a few months ago however I noticed the gold bezel had already had picked up a couple minor scratches at AD so it would’ve drove me crazy plus my grail model would be the RG on OF strap so I waited for it.
