Grail Watch is here 15500! Should I Insure?

Hi Everyone,
This is my second post. I just bought my grail watch, a (new) AP 15500 Silver Dial! It's brand new, I bought it on the secondary market and paid retail x 2+

Question: Should I buy additional insurance? If so any recommendations would be appreciated. Should I take any extra security precautions when in public?

Just curious, Thanks in advance! Glad to be here!

Hi

This is my 40,848th post. Insurance is a risk decision. If you feel that you have need to mitigate that risk, get some insurance. Otherwise, save yourself a few bucks a year and don't sweat it.

I agree with Tools. If you can afford to lose it or have it stolen, then don't sweat it. But with the prices these days, I'd insure for market value and then wear it without worry.

Probably the biggest number I've seen so far

Since you bought it on the grey market…I would suggest getting it appraised and insuring it for market. I recently bought a RO for the wife from an AP boutique and added to the ring insurance policy I have for her. Hoping first…nothing ever happens to the watch and then second…by the time something does, we would be up for another watch from the boutique. Even if you can never get an anniversary watch again.

Burleson, Texas? I’m guessing you’re packing your insurance.

Yeah…brings a different perspective on things. Glad to live somewhere where you 15500 is nothing special to see walking around town.

Maybe an overly technical answer, but if this is your only watch or only hugely expensive watch, then I might just cover attached to home or rental policy and make sure the fine print reads covered outside of home. Downside is usually you get dinged by deductible, but this is way way cheaper than the itemized special jewelry type policy. And in your case the deductible will be okay because the item value is so big and the insurance rate then so cheap as a % it makes sense to do it that way.

Tools point is spot on generally.

The oddity of risk preference for me is that at some strange point when the cost of insurance starts costing the price of a nice watch annually, it may be cheaper to just take the chance and ‘self unsure’ by replacing the pieces where something unfortunately happens.

Insure it. Even if you cold afford the loss, why? Go on Hodinkee and look at the insurance option and open an account. No appraisal needed and you set the price. Pay and go on.

I went naked for awhile but after an uptick in robberies (or at least the reporting of them), I basically stopped wearing watches. I then had them insured at market value and do think the piece of mind is worth the cost.

I ended up insuring it with briteco for .5% of value so I'm more comfortable wearing it in public now. Jgives, yes we usually carry our policy insurance with us but you never know what surprises could happen. I did not insure my older Pepsi or Sub or Tudor's but I'm thinking about them too. Thanks again everyone!
