6694 with an unusual dial

Hi guys, bit of a newbie so please be gentle ....

I have been offered a lovely 6694 and I was quite taken with the dial. I have never seen anything similar before.

The watch is circa 1977 and has a red to black fade with numerals.

Is this likely to be original Rolex or aftermarket (non Rolex).

Aftermarket dial, brand new replacement. Definitely not from 1977. Most likely the hands are replacements too.

A popular reference for modding ...

The 6694 is a relatively affordable model so it's popular for modding.

A while back, an eBay seller had a bewildering array of after-market dials and particularly targetted the 6694 when promoting his dials. Lots of bright colours, diamond dials and the modern kinda look like we are seeing here. A great way for someone who is not too hung up on originality to get something on their wrist that looks Rolex AD show-room fresh, without spending silly money

Thanks for the input guys. Funny thing is, I thought the red , black graduated effect looked kind of 70s :-)

I have since found out that the dial has been 'refinished' i.e. - an original dial with a paint job.

what is the general feeling about this kind of thing ? Would it put you off ?

I myself would leave it. It would be more difficult to sell if you wanted a change.

Original 6694 dials are actually quite common. It all depends on what you can get the watch for. If you like the dial then go for it. But I would try to buy it at a price that still lends room to replacing the dial down the road if you ever decide to sell it.

An example:

Price would have to be amazing for me as I think it would be tough to get your money back later. Find out if the seller knows the service history as that is expensive relative to the price of these.

But if originality is not a priority for you and you dig it and the price is right -get this thing on your wrist and enjoy!
