Best place to buy GMT II
Hi,
As a newbie, can anyone advise which country is best to purchase the new GMT II (116710LN)? I live in Melbourne, Australia but I do travel a lot in Asia. Recently I went to an authorised dealer in Melbourne asking for the GMT II and was told to wait 1 year, and they would give priority to existing customers... (excuse me???) Questions I'd like to know answers are: 1. is the warranty truly global? 2. usually how long is the warranty? 3. how often do I need to service the watch? 4. are ADs trustworthy? i.e. will they swap in inferior parts? I've heard horror stories when friends took their expensive watches for service and got something different back. 5. are there discounts on Rolex's from ADs? I've heard that since the new GMT II are so popular, they are not discounted. I believe in shopping around, or maybe I'm wrong? 6. Last, are there reputable 2nd hand dealers in Melbourne Australia? Thx and Merry Xmas Kai |

Welcome to TRF.
1. The warranty is iternational 2. 2 years 3. It is advisable to service the watch every 5-6 years. 4. AD's are the most trustworthy thing. If you buy from an AD you are fully covered 5. There are discounts for watches if you pay in cash. If the AD is not offering a discount use your negotiating skills. 6. I am not from australia and i can't give a correct answer to your last question. Good luck with your purchase and enjoy your stay here |

Err buddy...Orchi is new here as well...
As little as Orchi knows...the best prices of NEW n USED watches can be found in Malaysia...due to the fact that watches being sold are NOT subjected to excise duties or taxes...well at least for Malaysians...(for the time being) On top of that...Malaysian currency is still 'cheap' by comparison against the major forex currencies...like Euro...USD...Japanese Yen...British Pound...Aussie Dollar...NZ Dollar...Singapore or Brunei's dollar...etc.etc. A dear friend from Germany flew 1st class to Malaysia recently...just to get himself a brand new 2007 Daytona Ref 116520 Z series...black dial. In Germany...he said he might have to wait for 9 months or so...before he could get to buy a new Daytona watch with White dial...n that's after paying additional +19% VAT on the price of the watch in Germany. Watches used to be cheaper in Singapore n Hong Kong...but since Singapore now has 7% GST...n Hong Kong's VAT is at 25% n excise duty for luxury goods could be 35%...to begin with...unless perhaps the New watches could be free from taxes at Duty Free shops in Singapore's Changi airport or HongKong's Chek Lap Kok airport. Presently...a NEW Ref 116710LN GMT Master II(50th Anniversary) is being sold by dealer at around RM25,000 - 27,000...which is equivalent to roughly USD7,700 - 8,500 averagely....which is higher than its official retail price of RM20,000 or USD6,250...roughly. Hopes that helps... |

Good advice, Malaysia is a cool place, been there quite a few times. You really need to go there to buy. I would also say that Singapore, Japan and Hong Kong are good places to buy a new GMT too.
Used dealers in Australia can be quite expensive. Somehow the MSRP of Rolex watches in Australia is higher than the MSRP in some other neighbouring countries (must be due to exchange rates). Good Luck |
