116610 legit check

My friend just text me saying he bought a sub from his friend in Michigan to help him out. The purchase price he told me seems way to low if his friend really needed money. The reason for the low price he said was his friend plans to buy it back. I told him to go get it authenticated but seems fishy to me. This is the only pic he sent me. What does TRF think?

Kind of hard to tell from your pic, but I don't think it is

Bad angle in the picture but looks fishy to me. Color of bezel numbers look white rather than platinum (lighting?), pearl looks a little large. LEC at 6 o’clock is really big. Shouldn’t be a hole in the center of the pinion wheel.

I couldn’t tell if it was a hole at the pinion wheel or a reflection. I thought the rehut engraving looked off. I’m going to give him a heads up that he needs to get it checked out ASAP.

Since pointers are discouraged, i advise you to compare the image you posted with one of the genuine watches in the Classifieds forum, for example this fine specimen:

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=584991

If you compare the first image of the watch with the image you posted and flip back and forth, you will see a lot of differences. Some small, some pretty substantial. Pay attention to every detail, and you will find your answer.

There is a hole in the pinion. This screams fake! The rehaut engravings, the hands, the sel and the CG 's are hidden in this picture! They will be wrong as well.

Well, I tried to tell him gently that it looks like it might be fake and he should get it authenticated but he insisted that he already had and all was good. I’m not going to push the issue. I already warned him it looks off.

If he's a friend I would make it very clear that he bought a fake and he needs to get his money back.

How much did he say he paid for it?

That just tells me his story is as fake as the watch. If he genuinely paid $5k for it, your doubts should have him very concerned. His claim of already having it authenticated is clearly a lie, because it's clearly fake.

He probably paid $20 for it in some back alley and is just trying to impress you with a $5k watch he just bought. I'd call him out on it, I don't like being lied to.

Agree.

OP. Looks like he might be blowing hard to impress you. I would let it go. Plenty of people try to impress with fakes, no need to trash a friendship over a watch you wouldn't buy.

Well if your friend’s friend needed the money - and for some reason felt the need to “collateralize” the $5K - then your friend should simply pursue repayment an easier way. I’m sure the $5K has been spent on whatever commitment for which it was needed.

Perhaps suggest to your friend that an IOU has more value down the road than a Rolex. Tell him to let his friend have it back for the piece of paper.

After all if your friend’s friend intends to “buy it back” then mows the time - just an IOU instead of the $5K for now.
