Icon5 Top Gear presenter criticallly ill after crash.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/n...re/5365676.stm

"Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond is in a critical condition in hospital after a crash in a jet-powered car while filming for the programme.
The presenter, 36, was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary which has a special neurological unit.

A North Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesman said he was unconscious when they got to the scene and a hospital spokesman described him as "critical".

The BBC confirmed the presenter had been injured during a Top Gear shoot.

Inspector Mike Thompson, of North Yorkshire Police, said officers were dealing with the incident at Elvington airfield, a former RAF base, in North Yorkshire.

He said: "At 5.45pm this evening we received a report via the fire service of a male person trapped in what was described as an overturned jet car which had been driven on the airfield.

"The male occupant has received serious injuries and has been airlifted to hospital at Leeds."

The presenter was born in Birmingham, educated in Yorkshire and lives near Cheltenham.

In addition to presenting Top Gear for the BBC, he also fronted Brainiac on Sky One until recently. "

Irwin, Brock and now this.... What an awful month...
My thoughts and prayers are for Richard and his family.

Dang, they've pulled some stunts but this is bad. I hope he pulls through. TG is one of favourite programs.

Latest reports on TV here are that he is in the neurological unit with very serious head injuries. He was unconscious when they got to him but he started coming around when they got him to hospital by air ambulance.

Seems he was driving a rocket powered dragster capable of 300mph when something went wrong. I think personally this was too dangerous for a TV presenter, even for those guys.

I'm so sick of hearing bad news right now.

That is terrible news. Hope he pulls through...but, more importantly, hope he does not have any permanent brain damage.

Damn, what bad luck and news. He is quite a good presenter and I enjoy his 'tifs' with JC.

Hope he's okay but serious head injuries are tough to recover from.

“YES!”

“No”

Latest report on Hammond this evening is he has a "significant brain injury" but the doctors remain "reasonably optimistic" of a good recovery.. His family and Jeremy Clarkson have been at his bedside most of the day.

Seems the rocket car veered off the track at close to 300mph, rolled several times and dug into the grass with the roll cage and his helmet buried in the ground.

Objection, Your Honor.

Learned counsel is leading the witness and attempting to put words in his mouth.

The witness stated that he had read an article that was provided to him by my worthy (snicker, snicker) opponent. He never stated that he had independent knowledge prior to that reading of said program.

Objection sustained.

Sit down, Mr. Goodwatch.

If he looks like making a good recovery yes I do think they will show it. If I know Clarkson he will want to put on a brave face and get on with it. Its the old British war mentality of just getting on with it despite the casualties. Clarkson doesn't give a shit about what the pressure groups want. He'll go on I'm sure.

The new series should start next month so we will have to wait and see..

Good point. JC certainly shoots from the hip, PC be-damned.

I loved the bit he wrote about taking delivery of his much anticipated Ford GT. Poor guy... must have had the wind taken out of his sails with that many calls in one week to customer service on a hyper-expensive 'super car' .

But good on him for calling out Ford.

He took his son to an air show in the Ford GT last month and once again it failed him. Its more unreliable than an Aston DB9.. From what I hear its gone now, to be replaced by a Lamborghini Gallardo. Seems Jeremy paid the deposit last week.

Ah, good news. Hammond's doing all right and has just been transferred home from the hospital.

Slight correction James, he's been transfered to another hospital nearer home but this is good news nonetheless.
