Best Patek AC complement to Steel Rolex

Hey guys, I've been researching some grails, and was wondering how you guys feel about the following two Annual Calendars from Patek. The 5396G and the 5205G.

My two watches currently are steel Rolex (Daytona 116520 and Sub 114060) and I'd love for one day to own a leather strapped watch as well, and love the way these two look.

Curious what you guys think as far as the 3rd and hopefully final piece to the collection eventually - and which will likely hold up with the test of time as a lifer.

5205G (in blue) and 5396G (in white)

5205r or 5905r for variety and because Patek’s rose gold is gorgeous. If you prefer white metals, go for the 5205g – the case and dial make it a truly special piece.

5205g case is very interesting- hollow lugs and concave bezel. That’s the one

Leather goes great on your 2 beautiful watches! A really high quality distressed strap on the Submariner or a really well made croc on the Daytona. Try that on for size first is my bet, but I’m about making a watch more versatile rather getting an entire watch for more versatility. How else will you add memories to it if it sits in the case?

Both of those annoy me with the 24 on the 24 hour register not fitting with the hands, it’s covered up. Have you considered the 5146?

5146 is my all time fav. But no denying 5205 and 5396 are stunners.

I would just get a basic Calatrava such as 5227 if the size works for you, e.g. the black dial G, or go back in time and get a preowned 3940 which will always remain a classic.

5205R and 5396R-015 are gorgeous, I preferred RG over WG.

I am thinking about getting one of those but can't decide to go with the boutique or grey. Grey can get 10%+ discount but no relationship for future purchase of sport models at msrp.

Howdy sir,

Good news: you do not go wrong with either.
Bad news: hard choice.
Good news: fun process.

Given your Rolexes already "show" their presence, I tend to recommend 5205G. You will love it.
Disclaimer: I have the 5205G but am now considering 5396G or 5396R. I think 5205G is more special than either 5396. The blue in 5205G is mesmerizing.

Keep us posted. HeeHaw is curious.

CountryBoy.
p.s. my Sunday morning galloping attire yesterday. Picture does no justice to any of the elements, especially 5205G

Still beautiful watches. I'm known to be incredibly detailed and perfectionist but that 24 thing does not bother me.

Someone recommended 5146. I have that too and like it very much but in my humble opinion not same league as 5205 and 5905.

"chacun à son goût" as we say in the south.

I don't think you can go wrong with either one, really. I too went through this process last week and I ended up with a 5396g-014. It didn't sing to me until I tried it on. Have you tried on both pieces?

In addition to the Patek (which is also a lifer so I'm not concernced about resale), my two other watches are also Rolex (116500 white and 16710 all bezels/both bracelets). Good luck, Pateks are on a different level of finishing compared to Rolex.

When going from Rolex to Patek, there are a few things to consider. Both the 5205 and 5396 are great watches and are definitely more of a dress watch compared to the Rolex Daytona and Sub. Knowing that they are dress watches, you will notice legibility is not their strong point, compared to your existing watches. The 5205G blue dial has some lume on the hands, compared to other 5205 which has more limited legibility in dim lighting. Another thing to compare is the tang buckle vs the deployant clasp as that is a difference between the 5205 and the 5396.

Have you considered the recently discontinued 5146?

I like both watches but I would give the slight edge to the 5205g. Looks a little more modern and has a more interesting case. Also the 5205g can look a little more casual whereas the 5396 is more dressy.

I might be biased but definitely the 5205. It has a lot of things going for it. It has many classic Patek aesthetics with a modern interpretation. With the right strap you can dress it down well.

I tried on the 5396 before. Beautiful piece, but it can feel a lot more dressy.

between the two, 5396. however, i would cast another vote for the 5146. timeless, pure patek.

5140 PC all around nicer watch imho. Current prices are soft making these accessible at a steep discount to msrp vs your typical sports model.

Previous version also nice as well as the 5940.

A Biased Vote for the 5396

Mine is in rose gold and it is a stunner. My crappy pictures don't do it justice. To me it is classic Patek taking styling cues (with a date window) from historical PC references 1527/2497/3448/3449...

Well the 12 is also missing from the 5396 so they are symmetrically balanced right?
