Thoughts on aftermarket dials?

Hey guys,

Ive been in the hunt for the 118235 RG Daydate with diamond and ruby dial for a long time and came across a seller with an aftermarket dial that imitates the exact same dial I'm looking for, but with a good price.

He doesn't have the original dial but is giving a kick ass price for it in my opinion. Ive never bought a watch with an aftermarket dial so Im a bit skeptical. I heard that if you have any aftermarket parts, I can't get it serviced at RSC? Is this true? Also, any feedbacks on what your thoughts are on an aftermarket dial would be helpful!

Thanks always! :)

I don’t think anywhere here is going to approve of aftermarket parts. And yes, it’s true that Rolex will not service with aftermarket parts. Either your AD will not send the watch out in that form or Rolex will confiscate the aftermarket parts.

Personally, I buy Rolex for the design an craftsmanship. Adding aftermarket parts seems to defeat the main reason for buying Rolex in the first place.

I don’t think that I’d be comfortable unless I could get a proper Rolex dial at the same time. As mentioned above, it seems that RSC won’t service with an aftermarket dial, and the long run parts availability to independents is never 100 percent certain.

If it came with two dials, I could “buy the seller,” there was proper documentation, etc., sure…I’d be open to it then. But, and this may sound silly, there are two types of after market dials IMO. I’m not comfortable with a dial that copies an OEM look as my watch is a “copy” and not a “real” Rolex at that point in some ways. If the dial was obviously after market (say its translucent so that I could see the movement, etc.), and I had an original dial as a backup, then I’d be much more into it. Have you looked into dial swaps? RSC sometimes does this depending on configuration and it may be a way to get the dial you want. But your money/choice of course. Good luck in the search! TLDR: generally no, sometimes maybe)

Very true, but nothing wrong with some minor modifications.
After market dial would be out of the question for me

Somehow aftermarket dials are taboo but not aftermarket straps.....

Both easily swapped out...

Anyone ever explain this phenomenon?

I personally don’t care for full am dials. They’re usually cheap and the donors are often from f___es.

But I do like refinished or customized colorful oem dials.

I guess if you can do it yourself easily like a strap, maybe.

Have to agree and Rolex would not service it unless dial was replaced to original not worth the hassle.

Definitely no for me.
If you do change parts, make sure these are factory/original with service done by RSC or AD.

Usually pictures are welcome but in this case they are needed IMHO. with that said, I have no objections to aftermarket dials only if you're given the original one with the watch, so you can have it reinstalled if you change your mind.

The customized Rolex market is huge. It may be scoffed upon by the more conservative members here but believe me it is vast. The kids of Insta don't care about servicing...hell they don't even know about servicing their cars...fix it when it breaks. Just hastag and scroll.....some pretty stuff there. Do what makes you happy, its always reversible if you keep the original parts safe.

I'd love a mint matte 16800 dial for my 16610

This.

I've had every Rolex completely brushed or parts brushed / matte-ed.

Everyone has a Sub, why not make it what I truly want? Shocking - it's not to retain value or how much can I get for it - it's more about how much more I'll enjoy it.

16610 fully brushed (myself):

214270 bezel brushed (Rolliworks):

124060 is currently at LA Watchworks getting fully brushed.

So I for one support any changes or mods that would make you enjoy your watch even more.

Nice examples above, makes sense now every man and his dog has a ROLEX. Anyone ever had a play on the custom watch configurator on Titan Blacks website...cool stuff.

I think a custom dial that has no trademarks on it (Rolex, Datejust, Oyster Perpetual, etc) is up to the owner.

For example a full pavèd gemstone dial.

Or an enamel artistic rendering might be worth the effort.

If swapping a dial every 5-10 years is too much work, then don’t do it.

The donor plate being OEM is up to the owner - but I’d lean towards that.
